Candidates are invited to apply for a (Fixed term maternity cover) Emergency Medicine Consultant post. The successful applicant will join the team of 22 ED consultants delivering care across our 2 EDs at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. We see 145,000 ED attendances a year. 25% of these are children. We see the highest number of major trauma cases of all Major Trauma Units in the South West region. A busy DGH with a dedicated and innovative EM consultant team, we perform within the top 40/121 trusts in England for 4 hr performance. £39 million pounds were investment in a newly extended and refurbished Emergency Department and Acute Medical Unit, completed in January 24 providing excellent facilities.
The departments have segregated Paediatric areas, are well supported by SDECs for medical and surgical specialties, co-located Primary care services, 24/7 onsite PPCI and interventional radiology at GRH.
The team deliver consultant led care from 8am until midnight with non-resident on call overnight, working 1:6 weekends via an annualised and self-rostered job plan. A strategy for reduced antisocial hours for our senior workforce is in place.
Main duties
On call supplement will be 3% (Category A) of a basic 10 PA salary. The department provides 16 hours of Consultant cover, 0800-midnight in Gloucester and 0800-2200 in Cheltenham. Consultants work a self rostered annualised job plan which optimises clinical cover, and provides flexibility for work/life balance and other interests outside the department. This process also allows for a fixed day off per week.
Weekend working frequency is 1 in 6. Weekday on calls will be divided amongst the consultants. The job plan may vary in response to other consultants' leave and to unplanned increases in work. The consultant will be expected to monitor their hours to ensure that the workload averages out to the proposed job plan.
Consultants provide cover for their colleagues for emergency work whenever they are away. The maximum number of Consultants away at any one time is always subject to the provision of an adequate service for patients.
About us
The Emergency Departments of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital together form the busiest services in the South West. Our combined new attendances total approximately 145,000 per year. Children comprise roughly 25% of the total attendances. We are the busiest Major Trauma Unit in the South West.
Medical and Nursing Staff
* This role is investing in the growth of the ED Consultant team, this will expand the team to 22.
* There are 4 F1s, 8 F2s, 6 ACCS ST1-2, 6 GPVTS, 2 ST3, 7 ST4-6, 1 Chief Registrar, 12 Speciality doctors and 1 Associate Specialist.
* There are currently four Advanced Clinical Practitioners, 7 Physician Associates, 16 Emergency Practitioners.
* The 2 departments are staffed by 136 nurses WTE.
* There is mental health practitioner in the department 9am-8pm 7/7 and an alcohol worker to support both Departments.
* The department is closely supported by a discharge team and frailty team.
* The department has a team of dedicated Practice Development Nurses.
* Under the Agenda for Change framework all senior staff nurses and above have expanded practitioner roles.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration and a licence to practise
Clinical Experience
* A full understanding of clinical risk assessment
* Clear logical thinking showing an analytical/scientific approach to clinical practice
Desirable
* Previous experience of working in the NHS.
* Resuscitation (ALS/APLS/ATLS/ETC) course instructor
* Dual accreditation in allied specialties
Quality Improvement
* Evidence of involvement in Quality Improvement work

* Additional qualification in QI work
Management and Administrative Skills
* Understanding of Clinical Governance
* A willingness to accept responsibility and provide leadership
* Awareness of current relevant developments within the wider NHS

Salary and contract
£109,725 to £145,478 a year Per Annum. Fixed term 12 months. Part-time.
