An exciting opportunity has arisen to support the Hospital Liaison Psychiatry Service and Care Home Liaison Service in Swindon for a period of 6 months starting from May 2026. This post will be ideal for portfolio pathway applicants in old age psychiatry who would like to gather evidence for their portfolio application. The postholder will support the old age psychiatry hospital liaison service and Care Home Liaison Service in Swindon. The Great Western Hospital will be the District General Hospital where the post holder will provide Consultation Liaison. The post holder will be based in Victoria Centre in Swindon which is within the Great Western Hospital Campus and is part of Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. The post holder will also support the Care Home Liaison Service which is based in The Victoria Centre. The post holder will have the support of MDT of both teams. This post will also be supported by a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist for portfolio pathway application guidance.
Main duties of the job
* Assessment and management of in-patients with complex health care needs including comorbid physical and psychiatric illnesswithin Great Western Hospital, Swindon.
* Assume Responsible Clinician (RC) status for inpatients within Great Western Hospital, Swindon and subject to the Mental Health Act 1983 amended 2007.
* Participation in Mental Health Act assessments in both the emergency Department and patients admitted to the wards in the hospital. Since this is a part of agreed clinical responsibilities, the post holder will not claim assessment fees for patients seen at the premises of GWH within normal working hours.
* Rapid assessment and treatment when required for patients presenting at ED.
Qualifications
* MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
* Relevant Higher Degree e.g MD,PHD,Msc or other additional clinical qualifications
* MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
* Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of gaining CCT
* Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
* Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
* CCT in General Adult Psychiatry
Experience
* Experience of assessing and treating patients in an inpatient/community setting.
Personal Skills
* To possess leadership skills and be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
* Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work
* Able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, in order to effectively work with patients, carers and staff.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills
Clinical Skills
* Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in Adults of working age and to deal with crisis situations.
Knowledge
* Understanding of the management skills required to function successfully as a Consultant.
Teaching
* Commitment to and experience of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching.
* Understand principles of teaching.
Research and Audit
* Experience or involvement in a research project and publication.
* Experience of carrying out an audit project.
Management
* Evidence of management/leadership skills training.
