Job details: Therapy Assistant, Band 3, Division Clinical Support Services. Responsible to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Clinical Lead Therapist. Accountable to Therapy Leads and Therapy Services Manager. Type of contract: Permanent. Hours: 37.50 per week. Location: Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Responsibilities
* To assist with the provision of physiotherapy and occupational therapy to acute in-patients across various wards and across various therapy teams as required.
* To assist with administrative tasks in the team.
* To assist with maintenance and provision of therapy equipment.
* To work flexibly as part of the therapy team.
* To participate and lead in the in-service training rota.
* To carry out the appropriate procedures and related tasks that have been selected and delegated by the therapist with the appropriate level of competency.
* To provide patients and carers with direction and guidance on rehabilitation activities as directed by the physiotherapist or occupational therapist.
* To assist with home visits, groups, and treatment programmes as directed by therapists.
* To support therapists in specific treatment programmes, including manual handling of patients with physical disability.
* Setting up equipment for use by therapists during treatment sessions or for home use to assist patient independence.
* To provide advice on the safe use of equipment to patients and others as appropriate.
* To participate in the maintenance, cleaning and recharging of therapy equipment and in the maintenance of treatment areas in line with health and safety policies.
* To cover for absent staff or support a therapist who has staff shortages if needed.
* To comply with Trust policy on confidentiality and to attend in-service training and meetings as required.
* To travel between sites and patients’ homes as required, ensuring safety of patients and equipment during travel.
Administration
* To participate in the smooth running of work areas by undertaking administrative tasks (e.g., making appointments, telephone calls, and other clerical activities).
* To keep regular, up-to-date records (written or electronic) and assist therapists with departmental statistics.
* Maintain appropriate levels of stock within the therapy team and arrange transport for patients.
* Direct patients to appropriate locations within the Trust and book interpreters as needed.
* Use good communication skills with patients of all ages and with carers, including those with communication difficulties.
* Handle patient/relatives’ queries courteously and efficiently.
Communication
* Liaise with the occupational therapist/physiotherapist regarding patient care and report any change in condition to the supervising therapist.
* Communicate with the multidisciplinary team, carers, external agencies, and others involved in patient care; support effective communication with patients or relatives who have barriers to understanding.
* Deal sensitively with patients and carers who have high levels of anxiety or aggression and manage daily emotional stress related to diagnosis or prognosis.
* Participate in the trust’s performance appraisal and supervision to review performance and identify training needs.
Working conditions
* May be exposed to confined working conditions within patients’ homes or hospital environments.
* Potential exposure to unpleasant conditions and hazardous substances; may encounter patients with highly infectious conditions.
* Work patterns may be disrupted by frequent demands from staff, patients, students, relatives, and telephone calls.
* Must comply with the Trust manual handling policy at all times.
