Access to Communication and Technology is a specialist electronic assistive technology service based at the West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre, B29 6JA. The service provides specialist assessment, set‑up, provision and maintenance of electronic assistive technology for children and adults with complex conditions requiring Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Environmental Control (EC).
Responsibilities
* Support the clinical team in planning, preparation and implementation of assessment and provision of Assistive Technologies and low‑tech techniques for clients with complex physical or learning disabilities and challenging behaviours.
* Prepare resources for demonstration and provision to clients, including symbol communication books (e.g., The Grid, Boardmaker, Communicate in Print) and programming of vocabulary onto Voice Output Communication Aids and environmental control resources.
* Set up and amend electronic assistive technology to meet the clinician’s prescription.
* Produce resources for individual patients and generic use to support communication and environmental control.
* Support the department’s device and stock management functions.
* Assist in organising training events and courses offered by Access to Communication and Technology as an NHS England and Improvement provider.
* Assist the clinical team in providing training to local professionals and clients.
* Travel widely within the West Midlands region; a full UK driving licence is essential.
Qualifications and Experience
* Good education to GCSE level, including Maths and English to grade C or equivalent.
* Computer literacy.
* Relevant experience in a professional/technical environment (healthcare, education, retail).
* Experience working with people with disabilities.
* Experience using technical equipment.
Skills and Knowledge
* Ability to use a range of computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
* Strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload.
* Excellent communication skills with clients and team members.
* Emotional resilience when working with clients with life‑limiting conditions.
Personal Qualities
* Enjoys working with technology and is interested in how it works.
* Can work independently and as part of a team.
* Ability to seek support and assistance when required.
Other requirements
* Must hold a full UK driving licence and be able to drive around the region.
* Will travel to client homes and local areas within the West Midlands.
