Role Description

The Department of History is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in the History of the Modern Middle East (after 1800), possessing knowledge of Middle Eastern sources, peoples, communities, and languages.

The post is offered on an open contract from September 2026.

You should have a PhD in an area of history relevant to the post and ideally hold an appropriate teaching qualification. Applicants will have a strong publication record commensurate with their career stage, and be able to demonstrate the potential for grant capture. A capacity to develop knowledge exchange and impact will be desirable.

The successful candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm for, and experience of, designing and delivering modules informed by their research interests. Applicants should seek to demonstrate how their interests and experience would contribute to one or more of our Stage Two Explorations modules, our existing range of Stage Three Special Subjects ( undergraduate ) and our Taught Postgraduate programmes and options ( postgraduate ).

Academic staff in the Department are internationally renowned for their research. We are active participants in the interdisciplinary Centre for Modern Studies and, in the Borthwick Institute for Archives, possess unique research collections.

Role

* To develop research objectives, projects and proposals and carry out individual or collaborative research projects.
* To lead on and/or contribute to the production of research outputs and research outcomes.
* To design, develop and deliver teaching across a wide range of modules and/or within a particular programme or subject area.
* To undertake effectively a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities.


Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

* You will have a PhD in a cognate discipline relevant to the post. You should also hold an appropriate teaching qualification or show a willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice.
* You will have specialist knowledge in your subject area, enabling you to design, develop & deliver teaching appropriate to students in History. You will have experience of taking responsibility for teaching and learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. You will have the ability to supervise students at all levels.
* You will have the ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals that complement and enhance the department’s research strategy. You will be able to evidence your ability to disseminate your research findings as high-quality outputs, and at conferences and other appropriate events.
* You will have excellent IT communication skills, with the ability to engage with wide ranging audiences using a range of media. You will have an interest in developing impact beyond academia.
