What’s it all about?
As a Marine Operations Apprentice, you’ll support the safe and efficient running of the port. Your work may involve vessel berthing, vessel traffic services (VTS), marine services, harbour and marina operations, conservancy, environmental protection, statutory compliance, and operating harbour craft within the Harbour Authority’s jurisdiction.
We’re looking for motivated, reliable individuals who can work independently in a high‑responsibility role. The position involves shift work, including nights, and working in all environments—both on the water and shoreside.
We will provide hands‑on training across core marine operations, including patrol and pilot launches, berthing duties, and VTS. Health and safety is central to the role, with daily involvement in risk assessments and safe systems of work.
Apprentices may also have opportunities to shadow teams such as Cruise, Hydrography, and Health & Safety to gain a broader understanding of port operations.
How long does it take?
This apprenticeship involves rigorous and substantial training up to 3 years.
Where is the role based?
You will be based in Southampton and will be expected to attend college in Plymouth - this will be a block release throughout the year.
What are the entry requirements?
• 5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above which must include English and Maths
• A keen interest in the marine/port industry
• Able to use initiative and take ownership for own performance.
