Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Registered Nurse to join our dynamic and vastly developing Endoscopy Team.

The post holder will be assigned to work in the Endoscopy Unit and also in an Endoscopy Treatment unit this is on a Rotational basis between St Helens and Whiston. The Endoscopy unit requires the post holder to work shifts on a 7 day working week, the shift patterns are 8-4, 8.30-16.30, 10-6 and 12.30-20.30 these can be subject to change to ensure they maintain the service needs.

Main duties of the job

* To participate effectively in the formulation and implementation of client individualised care
* To undertake research, outreach and clinical audits as directed by the Unit manager to ensure maintaining and improving the delivery of service to the clients attending for procedures
* To promote concise and effective communication with service users/clients and ward nurses and staff within the hospital as per Trust and Unit policies
* To ensure that all equipment in the Endoscopy Unit is maintained safe and functional
* To contribute efficiently in the setting and implementation of effective patient care and standard monitoring in the Endoscopy Unit

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communications and relationship skills

* Provides and receives complex information sensitively and confidentially with patients/clients (e.g., care plan discussions).
* Communicates with compassion and empathy, using persuasion and reassurance.
* Recognises barriers to communication and adapts style as required.
* Communicates effectively while providing training to students and with the wider MDT team.

Clinical Skills

* Plan and organise a defined caseload of patients on a continuing basis.
* Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate patient care; recognise deterioration and respond according to protocol.
* Maintain appropriate levels of training for clinical skills within scope of practice.
* Ensure safe custody of drugs and comply with checking, witnessing and administration procedures.
* Respond to complaints/concerns in the absence of senior staff and escalate as required.
* Ensure incident/near-miss are managed and reported in a timely manner.
* Be part of the MDT decision making and advocate for patients as needed.
* Work within policies, SOPs and guidelines; undertake risk assessments and implement risk-reducing measures.
* Maintain privacy, dignity and safety of individuals at all times.

Use of Resources

* Participate in the efficient use of ward resources and equipment, including stock management and maintenance.
* Handle patient valuables securely.
* Sign off agency timesheets and liaise with the Roster Coordinator to balance your roster.
* Order and receipt goods in line with the Trust’s financial framework.

Team Development

* Deputise in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse.
* Manage time and resources to ensure high quality service delivery.
* Act as assessor/supervisor for junior staff and students.
* Set yearly personal and professional objectives and support appraisal processes.
* Be flexible in safe staffing and redeployment within scope of practice.

Research and Audit

* Contribute to data collection for research and audits.
* Identify audit topics relevant to the ward/department.
* Critically evaluate research before applying to clinical practice.

Personal Development

* Identify areas for self-development and training within performance planning and development review.
* Maintain a professional portfolio and reflective diary; support wellbeing and continuous learning.
* Promote a culture of learning and innovation.
* Adopt a reflective approach to practice to improve continually.


Person specification


Qualifications

* 1st Level Registered Nurse (degree/diploma)
* Current NMC Registration
* Evidence of continuing professional development


Knowledge & Experience

* Knowledge of NMC standards and practice codes
* Clinical environment experience
* Understanding of NMC revalidation
* Experience in multidisciplinary teams
* Understanding of NHS issues at national, regional and local levels
* Experience communicating complex, sensitive information


Skills

* Excellent communication and relationship-building
* Ability to prioritise and coordinate workload
* Ability to de-escalate complex situations
* Effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication with patients and the MDT
* Confidentiality awareness
