Cell Press publishes over 50 scientific journals, including our top‑tier physical science titles Chem, Joule, Matter, Device, and Newton. We bring editorial excellence, commitment to innovation, and unparalleled reach to all areas of scientific exploration.


About the Role

Cell Press is launching a new journal, Matter & Light, to serve researchers working at the materials/light interface (photovoltaics, photocatalysis, photonics, luminescence, and related materials). The journal will be part of the growing portfolio under our flagship materials science journal Matter. We are seeking a Deputy Editor to help drive the launch and catalyse its rapid development. Working closely with the Matter family Editor in Chief, the Deputy Editor will shape a prominent, vibrant journal that fits cohesively into the Matter and Cell Press journal portfolio and create a high‑impact outlet grounded in a strong understanding of the international research community.


Responsibilities

* Define the aims, scope, and strategic priorities of the journal.
* Coordinate editorial evaluation of submissions to ensure quality and value.
* Develop a broad appeal, impactful, topical, and cohesive journal.
* Leverage an impressive network of leading researchers to attract influential article submissions.
* Travel extensively to attend relevant conferences and visit leading research institutes.
* Support Matter, the Editor in Chief, and editorial colleagues in the wider research ecosystem at Cell Press.
* Develop and foster partnerships with other editorial teams, production, marketing, press, and advertising teams to contribute to Cell Press’s overall publishing strategy.


Requirements

* Proven materials research expertise relevant to materials/light interactions, with broad current interest across materials‑related research.
* A strong international network of researchers within the journal’s scope and a proven ability to engage with and influence them.
* Conceptual and critical thinking skills across a wide range of scientific issues.
* Excellent organizational, project‑management, leadership, and teamwork skills.
* Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
