Role Overview
Early Days in Custody Practitioner at HMP Altcourse, a category B remand prison in Fazakerley, Liverpool. You will focus on the admission and reception of new arrivals, carrying out initial screening assessments, referrals, and identifying substance misuse needs.
Key Responsibilities
* Ensure patients have a medical plan of care, assess patients, and carry out relevant clinical investigations during their arrival, arranging follow‑up appointments and providing advice.
* Involved in release, court, and transfer processes; clinically evaluate and ensure safe transfer to acute hospitals if required, and ensure plans of care are understood by patients and the prison.
* Support audits and governance activities.
* Provide on‑site healthcare across the prison, including emergency care such as suturing, dressing, and primary care functions.
Hours & Pay
Full‑time, Monday‑Sunday service – 37.5 hours per week, with rotating shifts (7 am–8 pm, 8 am–9 pm, 9 am–10 pm). One weekend in three; rosters released 2 months in advance; occasional nights.
Annual salary up to £34,428 – £41,658 per annum FTE, pro rata, depending on experience.

Qualifications & Experience
* Registered nurse, Adult, NMC, with evidence of continued professional development.
* Understanding of multi‑disciplinary and multi‑agency working, clinical governance, health and safety, QOF, evidence‑based practice and national standards.
* Understanding of audit and Datix procedures.
* Experience in a hospital, community or prison environment is desirable.
