Visitor Assistant (Lotherton Hall)

Job title: Visitor Assistant – Lotherton Hall
Salary: A1 - A3 £24,480 – £25,185 (pro‑rated) plus weekend and bank holiday enhancements
Hours: 18.5 per week
Contract: Permanent
Location: Lotherton Hall, Aberford, Leeds, LS25 3EB


About the Role

As a Visitor Assistant you will provide a friendly, safe and accessible environment for visitors to enjoy learning about Lotherton Hall’s history and collections. You will engage the public through storytelling, support the house’s heritage interpretation, maintain the cleanliness and security of the site, and assist with sales, events and school visits. A flexible, customer‑focused approach is essential, as is the ability to work both independently and within a team.


Key Responsibilities

* Welcome visitors, provide information on services, collections and activities, and interpret exhibits where appropriate.
* Carry out reception and sales duties, including cash handling.
* Implement security procedures for the site, collections, and shop.
* Assist Learning & Access Officers with family workshops, school visits and guided tours.
* Maintain the site’s cleanliness, tidiness and presentation, including installing displays and stocking public information points.
* Support conferences, functions and other events, including evening work.
* Report changes in environmental conditions (humidity, lighting, etc.) to technical or collections staff.
* Participate in briefing sessions and develop relevant skills and knowledge.
* Represent Leeds City Council and Leeds Museums & Galleries positively at all times.
* Adhere to health and safety policy, complete required qualifications and carry out risk assessments.
* Promote equality and accessibility in line with Leeds City Council Equal Opportunities Policies.


Essential Requirements

Skills and Experience

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
* Experience in a customer‑facing role and dealing with the public in a polite, friendly manner.
* Cash handling and accurate financial record-keeping.
* Familiarity with security procedures and health & safety legislation.
* Knowledge of good practice in visitor services.
* Strong organisational skills and flexibility.

Knowledge

* Understanding of health & safety and equalities legislation.
* Recognition of the requirements for providing inclusive visitor services.


Desirable Requirements

* Basic ICT competency, including Microsoft Office.
* Interest in the work of Leeds City Council Museums & Galleries.
* Experience with basic object handling and care.
* Willingness for continuous professional development.
