Surgical First Assistant in Upper GI & Bariatric Surgery

The post holder will perform and assist in all aspects of surgical procedures (specifically Upper GI & Bariatric procedures) to an expert level in line with personal competencies. They will provide clinical leadership and supervision to surgical teams, assist with the strategic planning, development and management of the surgical services, and act as a mentor to junior team members. The post holder will work with consultants and support the highest standard of patient care.
This role is predominantly based at County Hospital in Stafford, with cross‑site working at Royal Stoke in Stoke‑on‑Trent also possible. The working pattern will be 37.5 hours over a 7‑day period, aligned with theatre operating times (between 08:00am and 20:30pm).
Main duties of the job
* Clinically responsible to the consultant surgeon, working under their direction as a member of the surgical team.
* Professionally accountable for one’s own actions and advanced practice, complying with local policies and professional codes of conduct.
* Operate within the recognised role and framework of the Royal College of Surgeons for Surgical Care Practitioners, adhering to the voluntary code of conduct.
* Provide competent, skilled assistance to the operating surgeon during the intra‑operative period, undertaking advanced practice and highly specialised skills for a wide spectrum of cases.
* Maintain specialist and expert knowledge of human anatomy/physiology relevant to the surgery undertaken.

Person Specification – Experience
* Substantial specialist experience post accreditation.
* Appropriate experience to demonstrate a high level of clinical skill and excellent manual dexterity.
* Two years hands‑on robotic surgical first‑assist experience.
Person Specification – Education
* RGN Level 1 / C&G 752 / ODP Level 3.
* Qualified Surgical Care Practitioner.
* Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council or Health Care Profession Council.
* Masters level education or in progress.
