Esther Ward is a 24 bedded multi speciality ward comprising of 8 side rooms and 4 bays. We look after a range of patients within the following specialities: ENT, Head and Neck, Thoracic, Oncology and Haematology. We look after patients under going complex surgical procedures including those with altered airways including tracheostomies and laryngectomies.

We are looking to employ a hardworking, self-motivated individual with extended skills and knowledge such as venepuncture and cannulation, medication administration including enteral and intravenous routes, blood transfusion administration, wound dressings using aseptic technique and altered airway management.
This role will allow you to develop and gain a wide range of additional clinical skills which will enhance your own personal development whilst contributing to the high standard of care expected on Esther Ward.
You will be expected to work with the wider multi-disciplinary team and support junior colleagues such as nursing assistants and student nurses

Main duties of the job
The clinical environment offers the opportunity to learn and practice a wide range of skills across a very varied caseload of patients with the support of an experienced multi-specialty nursing team.
The ward offers an internal specific competency programme, 5 study days per year and a link role to which specific study days and learning opportunities are available. The senior nursing team are very supportive and friendly and will encourage you to develop your nursing and leadership skills.
The wards encompass the Trusts objectives and standards of care and staff are very passionate at maintaining these standards and are always looking at ways to better patient experience. The ward has excellent patient feedback and the nurses are very proud of the care that is delivered.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Independently manage a group of patients within the specialty whilst
working as part of the multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct patient care
Is wholly accountable for his / her practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his / her knowledge and professional competence.
To be an effective communicator with patients/carers/families regarding disease treatment and management.
Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment,
planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This includes
history taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreed
diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.
Undertake prescribed physical observations as follows: blood pressure, temperature, respirations, blood sugars, urinalysis, weight and height, drain monitoring including measurement and report exceptions appropriates.
Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication via oral, enteral and IV routes including transfusion of blood and blood products
Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the
specialty. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead
others to do the same.
Work alongside the multi-disciplinary team to ascertain treatments and advise on nursing priorities.
Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advance clinical skills and responsible for carrying out specialist nursing procedures to area.
Complete evidenced based interventions including enteral feeding line care, IV line care, complex dressings and wound management, pre and post-operative care relevant to specialties.
