The Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) Programme team is at the forefront of the Ministry of Defence’s efforts to develop novel technology into new capabilities, helping to protect our armed forces from the complex and growing threats that face the UK and the world.

You will support the programme’s policy portfolio, including international partnerships, correspondence, and external communications, with opportunities to get involved in programme delivery. We are looking for a proactive individual who enjoys working with others, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and is a passionate about technology and defence.

This is a great opportunity to join the DEW team as we scale up and demonstrate improved ways to develop and procure capabilities in collaboration with industry. We sit in the MOD’s Strategic Programmes Directorate, who develop complex weapons for the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

You will support the DEW policy portfolio, leading on correspondence, (responding to PQs and briefs), and supporting policy development, communications, and international relationships. An excellent candidate will be passionate about building relationships, be a confident and clear communicator, and be proactive and passionate about delivering quality work at pace.

The policy branch of the team focuses on international partnerships, developing policies for DEW use, and exploring interventions to make the UK the best place to research, develop, and deliver DEW capabilities, from building skills via PhD programmes to identifying infrastructure investments such as testing facilities.

As the C2 (HEO) DEW Policy Officer, you will do the following (subject to change based on business need):


* Lead on DEW correspondence, drafting responses and clearing answers with relevant teams and seniors.
* Support and lead on specific areas of DEW policy, including hosting workshops, drafting proposals and building relationships with teams across MOD and government.
* Support DEW international relationships, including leading specific partnerships. This will include building knowledge and relationships with nations, and identifying and delivering opportunities that benefit the programmes.
* Support the development and delivery of DEW communications, including working with teams across Defence to produce external comms for a variety of audiences and facilitate events.
* Support the wider DEW programme, including organising events, or producing resources or tools that benefit the programme.

The DEW team works closely with delivery partners in DE&S, Dstl, and industry, and there will be occasional need to travel (costs covered by team).

Person specification

This role requires an individual with the following personal attributes:

Essential:

* Demonstrated experience in policy skills, such as briefing, drafting, and making policy arguments.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
* Self-motivated with a proactive approach to tasks.
* Exceptional organisational and time management abilities, enabling effective task prioritisation.
* Ability to identify, build, and maintain productive relationships with key stakeholders.
* You must hold or be willing to obtain security clearance (SC).

Desirable Criteria:

* Experience with correspondence, and/or international engagement.
* Experience working in a defence, security, or technology context.

Alongside your salary of £36,530, Ministry of Defence contributes £10,582 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.

* London locations may attract an allowance of £3,300 per annum

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
