The Role
As an Electrical Laboratory and Workshop Manager, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This role is critical in maintaining operational readiness, supporting engineering teams, and fostering a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
The Electrical Laboratory and Workshop Manager is a key operational role responsible for the safe, secure, and efficient management of electrical laboratories and workshop environments across the Sense and Connect, Effectors, and Space business units. Functionally reporting into the Head of Engineering Operations, the Lab Manager ensures compliance with all relevant safety and regulatory standards, while enabling high-quality engineering delivery through effective resource, equipment, and facility management.
1. Lead lab safety initiatives and ensure a culture of proactive risk management.
2. Collaborate with engineering and facilities teams to align lab operations with project and business needs.
3. Maintain governance processes for incident reporting, compliance tracking, and audit readiness.
4. Support onboarding and training of lab users, ensuring awareness of safety and operational procedures.
5. Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance lab efficiency and capability.
6. Contribute to strategic planning for lab infrastructure and capability growth.
This role is full time, 37 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with working days onsite and days working from home. You may be required to travel to other Babcock sites around the UK.
Essential Experience of the Electrical Laboratory and Workshop Manager
7. Lead lab safety initiatives and ensure a culture of proactive risk management.
8. Collaborate with engineering, HSE, and facilities teams to align lab operations with project and business needs.
9. Maintain governance processes for incident reporting, compliance tracking, and audit readiness.
10. Support onboarding and training of lab users, ensuring awareness of safety and operational procedures.
11. Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance lab efficiency and capability.
12. Contribute to strategic planning for lab infrastructure and capability growth.
Qualifications for the Electrical Laboratory and Workshop Manager
13. HNC/HND or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Operations, or related field (preferred).
14. NEBOSH or IOSH certification (desirable).
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role. However, the successful candidate must be able to obtain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance once in post.
