Head of prosthetics

Dundee
NHS National Services Scotland
Posted: 30 March
Offer description

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

An opportunity has arisen for a highly experienced prosthetist to lead the prosthetic team based at the TORT Centre in Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, an in-house NHS service with on-site manufacturing of prostheses.

The head of service is responsible for the clinical and professional leadership of the Prosthetics Service, leading on clinical and technical governance, strategic development and quality improvement activities as well as managing their own patient caseload. They will effectively manage a team of prosthetists and prosthetic technicians, ensuring patient‑centred service delivery. They will represent the NHS Tayside Prosthetics Service on local and national groups.

The successful candidate will be highly experienced as a prosthetist and able to provide evidence of recent practice either in the NHS or private healthcare. They will have extensive knowledge in the field of upper limb and lower limb prosthetics and be highly skilled in the provision of a range of prostheses. This will be reinforced by practical knowledge of materials and production techniques, use of equipment and specialist tools.

Candidates will have experience in leadership roles in a clinical environment. The ability to work within multi‑disciplinary teams is vital to the role. The post holder will have a personal clinical caseload, which will involve treating hospital in‑patients and out‑patients at clinics; there is an expectation that the highest standards of patient care and healthcare practices can be demonstrated.

The head of service will oversee the training and mentoring of new staff members, students on placement and demonstrate new skills to less experienced clinicians. They will also provide prosthetics expertise to colleagues from other disciplines. They will assure the maintenance of the highest standards of prosthetic delivery, drive budgetary and provision efficiency and lead on the implementation of compliance with Medical Device Regulations.

Applicants must have an honours degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics as well as a postgraduate qualification or experience commensurate with the role or continuous professional development at Masters Level. Registration with HCPC as a Prosthetist is essential.

Competency will be demonstrated at interview through evidence of training, practical workplace experience and relevant qualification.
