The Opportunity
A leading UK-based, privately owned property developer is seeking an experienced M&E Manager to act as the technical authority for Mechanical and Electrical design and delivery across a growing national portfolio of large-scale PBSA-led and mixed-use developments.
Reporting directly to the Group Construction Director, this role will take ownership of M&E design management, sustainability strategy and technical assurance from early concept through construction, commissioning and handover. The successful candidate will play a critical role in shaping low-carbon, compliant and operationally efficient building services solutions across multiple concurrent projects.
This is a senior, client-side position offering genuine influence over design quality, sustainability outcomes and long-term asset performance.
Key Responsibilities
Act as the client's technical lead for all Mechanical and Electrical design and installation matters across multiple projects
Lead and manage the M&E design management function, overseeing external consultants, specialist designers, contractors, utility providers and ESCOs
Coordinate and review M&E design solutions from concept through RIBA Stages 1-5 and support delivery through construction and handover
Lead sustainability strategy coordination, ensuring energy performance, carbon reduction and environmental objectives are embedded within M&E design
Review energy strategies and propose technically robust, commercially viable and compliant building services solutions
Undertake formal Stage 3 and Stage 4 M&E design reviews and manage resolution of technical comments
Review fire strategies and ensure M&E compliance with statutory, building safety and project-specific requirements
Act as the primary interface for utilities, ESCOs, BMS specialists and energy infrastructure matters
Support procurement strategies for M&E contractors and specialist packages, including tender reviews and technical clarifications
Monitor M&E design development and installation through construction, commissioning and handover
Ensure Golden Thread, O&M manuals and digital M&E records meet regulatory and contractual requirements
Support sustainability obligations including BREEAM and Building Safety Regulator requirements
Provide post-handover technical support to facilities and estates teams where required
About You
You are a technically strong, commercially aware M&E professional with the confidence to operate autonomously across complex, multi-project portfolios.
Essential experience:
Degree-qualified (or equivalent) in building services engineering or a related discipline
Typically 10-15 years' experience in MEP design within consultancy, contractor, sub-contractor or developer environments
Proven experience managing and coordinating external M&E consultants, design managers and specialist contractors
Strong background in energy strategy development, sustainability-led M&E solutions and low-carbon design
Experience delivering large-scale residential, PBSA, hotel or mixed-use developments
Working knowledge of:
Building Safety Act and Golden Thread requirements
Fire strategy and M&E compliance
Building Regulations and Health & Safety legislation
Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously with a high degree of autonomy
Strong communication skills and confidence engaging with senior internal and external stakeholders
Willingness to travel regularly to sites across the UK
Desirable:
Chartered status (e.g. CEng, MCIBSE or equivalent)
Previous client-side experience within a developer, contractor or institutional environment
Experience working directly with utility providers, ESCOs and BMS specialists
Experience supporting BREEAM, planning and energy compliance submissions
