Job Description

We are recruiting a regulatory scientist to assess environmental hazards and risks of industrial and consumer chemicals under UK REACH and CLP Regulations. Working within our Chemicals Assessment Unit (CAU), you will:
* Evaluate the relevance and reliability of ecotoxicity and environmental fate data in chemical dossiers and reports;
* Summarize and present findings from environmental effects studies, fate data, and models;
* Describe study methodologies, noting data limitations and uncertainties;
* Use data to determine environmental classifications under CLP and assess compliance with UK REACH standards;
* Conduct quality assurance reviews and provide alternative interpretations when necessary;
* Contribute to setting priorities and identifying research gaps;
* Support test guideline development and animal replacement methods;
* Work within defined timelines to deliver quality outputs; and
* Collaborate with colleagues across teams and government bodies.
Incident response is integral to this role. You may be called upon to respond to incidents or support business continuity, with training provided and additional payments possible.
The Chemicals Assessment Unit operates within the Research division of the Chief Scientist’s Group, with dispersed office locations. We provide scientific advice to HSE and UK Government on chemical hazards, exposure, risk management, and collaborate internationally.
Experience/Skills Required
* A first degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., chemistry, biology, environmental science);
* At least two years of applied experience in environmental effects and/or fate of chemicals, at a national or international level;
* Ability to analyze complex scientific and numerical data to inform conclusions;
* Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills to meet deadlines;
* Experience with environmental hazard and risk assessments under REACH and CLP, with examples in your application.
