Overview

Registered Nurse (Assistant Nurse Manager) role at U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This position is located in the Nursing service at the Leeds VA Healthcare system in Leeds, Massachusetts. It is a permanent, full-time position at 40 hours per week.


Duties

* Functions as a role model, educator, practitioner, and supervisor providing leadership to the team.
* Enhances care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team to remove barriers and implement new evidence-based programs/processes.
* Adheres to ethical principles in decision-making, fostering accountability at personal, organizational, and staff levels.
* Equips staff with tools for culturally competent care and promotes a culture of accountability for high-quality, cost-effective outcomes.
* Cultivates alliances across the care continuum, building trust through active listening, engagement, and emotional intelligence.
* Participates in the development of care delivery models and environmental design, ensuring evidence-based, accessible, affordable, and equitable patient care.
* Aligns nursing/clinical objectives with organizational strategic outcomes, participating in strategy planning and execution.
* Performs other duties as assigned.


Work Schedule

Monday–Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm with rotating shifts including some weekends and holidays.

Compressed/Flexible: Not authorized. Telework: May be authorized on an ad-hoc basis upon the supervisor's discretion. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not authorized.


Incentives and Benefits

Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not authorized. Pay: Competitive salary, regular salary increases, potential for performance awards. Paid Time Off: 50 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% contributions by VA. Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care. Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory.

* The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Conditions of employment

* U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
* All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.
* Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
* You may be required to serve a probationary period.
* Subject to background/security investigation.
* Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Acceptable form(s) of identification will be required (I-9). Effective May 7, 2025, REAL ID requirements apply for acceptable identification for employment.
* Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
* Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).


Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

* English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), proficiency in basic written and spoken English is required for direct patient care positions.
* Education/Licensure: Graduate of an accredited nursing program (ACEN/CCNE) or equivalent pathway as described in VA qualification standards. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia. GNT exception may apply at entry steps if licensure is not yet obtained.

Notes: Grandfathering provision applies to current VA HCP employees in 0610 series as of 1/29/2024. Foreign education requires equivalency documentation as specified by VA/DOE guidance.

Grade Determinations: See VA qualification standards for nurse levels and related experience requirements. The online assessment details scope, education, and dimension criteria for Nurse I–III levels and justification for grade and level assignment. Note that foreign education is not creditable as related degrees.

Preferred Experience: 2-3 years of Mental Health Psychiatric Nursing.
