Offer description

Phillips 66 has been operating in the UK for over 65 years and we are committed to improving lives and empowering our employees and communities. Our culture focuses on safety, honour and commitment, guided by Our Energy in Action: we work for the greater good, create an environment of trust, seek different perspectives and achieve excellence.

Providing Energy. Improving Lives.

Civil and Structural Engineer Industrial Placement

If you want work experience that really counts, consider a Civil and Structural Engineer placement with Phillips 66. We’re seeking a student currently studying — or recently graduated with — a degree in Civil and/or Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline, to join us for a one-year industrial placement starting in summer 2026.

Throughout the industrial placement you’ll provide discipline support and technical expertise, contribute to short and long-term strategic planning, support during turnaround activities, and assist in the development and implementation of new projects. You’ll also support the asset management of a wide range of civil infrastructure, including structures, stacks, silos, cooling towers, bridges, roads, rail systems and drainage networks. You will act as a focal point for civil and structural related issues for the refinery and associated sites.

As a Civil and Structural Engineering placement student, you’ll have the opportunity to work on a wide range of civil and structural schemes. You will be involved in all stages of the project – from initial development, through to detailed design, costing, procurement and installation. You will collaborate with our experienced professionals to contribute to the design, maintenance and development of critical infrastructure, supporting both new projects and asset integrity updates. Should you do well during your time with us, you may be considered for a graduate position upon completion of your degree.

Qualifications And Education

* You are a motivated and proactive student who relishes a challenge, with an interest in Civil and Structural Engineering in the Energy sector.
* Working towards a minimum 2:1 in civil and/or structural engineering (or a similar approved qualification, HND) – we will also consider recent graduates.
* Good engineering/technical knowledge.
* Past work experience gained through industrial summer placements, internships, or other work experience is valued. Highlight this to show teamwork, organisation and problem-solving skills.

What are we looking for?

* Good communication skills (written and verbal).
* Able to apply knowledge to real-life challenges and create innovative solutions.
* Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams.
* Good safety awareness.
* Self-organizing to meet deadlines and deliver on projects.
* Confidence to work on your own initiative.

What Phillips 66 Can Offer You

* Opportunity to get real industrial experience with responsibility and accountability.
* Develop your skills as a Civil and Structural engineer with the opportunity to get involved in structural assessment of existing and new structures, develop temporary work schemes, assess ground condition for plant equipment and develop technical documents for surveys and inspections of civil and structural assets.
* Hands-on experience using industry standard software such as Tekla Structural Designer, Tekla Tedds, Advance Steel, NavisWorks and AutoCAD.
* Ability to integrate and learn from experienced professionals.
* Opportunity to become part of our Early Careers Network and take part in activities.
* Free daily lunch whilst working on site.
* Free accommodation for the first 6 weeks of your placement to help you settle in.
* Free access to our onsite gym.
* Competitive salary ranging between £28,000-£33,000 per annum pro rata, dependent on level of study completed.

Our Process

To be considered for this position you must complete the entire application process, including answering all pre-screening questions and providing your eSignature before the requisition closing date of 2 November 2025. Applications will be reviewed periodically, and you may be invited to selection events on a first-come, first-served basis. Our assessment days will be held at the Humber Refinery in the week commencing 24 November 2025 and may include an overnight stay and dinner with experienced engineers (reasonable travel expenses and overnight accommodation provided).

The Humber Refinery participates in the UK’s decarbonisation efforts and, as part of the UK Government’s net zero ambition, is on a journey to become the Refinery of the Future. We are involved in projects such as carbon capture initiatives and Sustainable Aviation Fuel production, among others.
