Job Description

This position involves professional duties of a teacher and related responsibilities in accordance with the Teachers’ Regulations (Northern Ireland) and associated schedules. The post requires promoting good relations, equality of opportunity and compliance with equality legislation.
Responsibilities and Duties
Exercise of general professional duties as required by the principal or employing authority. Duties include planning and preparing courses and lessons, teaching pupils, and assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment. Provide advice and guidance to pupils on educational and social matters, liaise with parents, and collaborate with staff and outside bodies as approved. Participate in meetings and contribute to the development of courses of study, teaching materials, and assessment methods. Maintain discipline, safeguard pupils’ health and safety, and support pastoral arrangements. Participate in arrangements for public examinations and in the preparation of pupils for such examinations. Be available for duties as required, within the terms of the contract and the school’s policies.
Note: The post may require involvement in staff development, administration, and other duties as appropriate to the grade and as may be assigned by the school or board.
Qualifications and Essential Criteria
* Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland by the date of taking up duty.
* Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification, or a teaching qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach Geography as the main subject by the date of taking up duty.
* Demonstrable experience of teaching Geography at post-primary level to achieve positive outcomes (Teaching practice accepted).
* Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
Essential Criteria (Additional, Interview Stage)
* Current knowledge of the subject area and subject-specific teaching approaches.
* Knowledge of assessment approaches to promote effective teaching and pupil progress.
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community; ability to motivate self and others; be an effective team member.
* Evidence of alignment with the School’s Values/ethos.
Desirable Criteria
* Ability and willingness to contribute to the School’s extra-curricular provision.
* Experience of teaching Geography to A-Level (Teaching practice accepted).
Disclosure of Criminal Background
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines regulated activity. If recommended for appointment to a post involving regulated activity, an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background will be required. You will be expected to meet the cost of the Enhanced Disclosure Certificate. Details for payment will be sent at the pre-employment stage.
