We’re looking for an Assistant ITS Engineer to join our Highways team on a 12‑month fixed‑term contract. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of Greater Manchester’s Intelligent Transport Systems, helping us keep the network moving and supporting the delivery of new roadside assets and digital capabilities.
You’ll play a key role in maintaining and developing the systems that underpin traffic management across the region, working with suppliers, contractors and internal teams to ensure our ITS assets remain safe, reliable and forward‑ready.
Your Role
As an Assistant ITS Engineer, you’ll support the operation, maintenance and development of our ITS and UTC systems. You’ll work closely with suppliers and contractors to ensure equipment is performing effectively, contribute to the delivery of new ITS schemes, and provide technical insight to help us manage the network efficiently. You’ll analyse data, support fault resolution, and help shape the next generation of digital traffic management tools across Greater Manchester.
What You’ll Bring
You’ll bring a positive attitude, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and confidence working with a wide range of stakeholders. You don’t need to be an expert from day one; what matters most is your willingness to learn, adapt and get involved. Ideally, you’ll have a degree in a numerate, engineering or humanities discipline, or relevant technical experience with transferable skills. You’ll be proactive, organised, and collaborative, with the curiosity and flexibility to pick up new technologies, tools and processes as our systems evolve.
What We Can Offer
This is a 12‑month fixed‑term role within a supportive, friendly and highly skilled team. Salary ranges from £36,093 to £41,161 depending on experience. You’ll gain hands‑on experience with real‑world ITS and UTC systems, contribute to major capital projects, and develop technical and operational skills that are in high demand across the sector.
We encourage candidates to discuss flexible working options at any stage of the recruitment process.
Our Benefits
* Generous annual leave starting at 28 days (plus bank holidays), increasing with service, with options to buy more.
* Free travel on buses across Greater Manchester, plus rail or Metrolink travel to and from work.
* Local Government defined pension scheme with life cover of 3x salary and options to boost your contributions.
* Enhanced family‑friendly leave policies including those supporting fertility treatment, alongside flexible and hybrid working and a special leave policy to support a range of unexpected events. Note that qualification criteria may apply, including a requirement to have been employed with the organisation for a minimum specified period of time.

Who Are We?
You’ll be joining the Highways Intelligent Transport Systems team, part of the wider Highways directorate responsible for keeping Greater Manchester’s roads safe, efficient and well‑managed. Our work directly supports millions of journeys each week and plays a vital role in improving reliability, reducing congestion and enabling sustainable travel choices. This role offers the chance to contribute to meaningful public outcomes while developing specialist skills in a growing and innovative field. We are also entering a period of significant growth and investment in our digital and ITS capabilities.
