Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist with expertise in Haematology to join our team on a fixed-term basis. We are seeking individuals who are dedicated to providing a high-quality, patient-centric service and are enthusiastic about mentoring and sharing their knowledge.
Your main site of work will be the SPS Hub laboratory, working as part of a Blood Sciences team of Biomedical Scientists to provide haematology test results for patients in primary care across Somerset, as well as from Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital.
SYNLAB UK & Ireland have established experience working in partnership with the NHS to deliver and improve pathology services through existing joint ventures, including Southwest Pathology Services (SPS).
Our team at SPS has been fundamental in making a positive difference to healthcare in Somerset for over a decade. We hold ISO15189 UKAS accreditation and are an HCPC-approved training laboratory for IBMS Registration and Specialist Portfolios.

Main duties of the job
1. Perform and interpret routine and specialist testing, providing patient-centered scientific excellence while maintaining high-quality standards in accordance with ISO15189.
2. Supervise, mentor, and support other Biomedical Scientists, Trainee Biomedical Scientists, Associate Practitioners, and Medical Laboratory Assistants, sharing your knowledge and experience.
3. Maintain fitness to practice and participate actively in CPD. SPS supports your professional development with resources and training.
4. Contribute to making a positive difference to the lives, health, and wellbeing of our community through our shared values.

Job description
Job responsibilities
* Participate in clinical trials, develop new tests, and validate research equipment, ensuring compliance with all relevant policies and regulations.
* Provide technical advice to clinical staff.
* Perform and interpret routine and specialist biomedical investigations under supervision.
* Ensure compliance with policies from regulatory bodies such as CPA, MHRA, NHSCSP, HTA, HFEA, and others.
* Utilize laboratory systems like LIMS and Q-Pulse for data entry, document review, and quality assurance.
* Communicate effectively and courteously, referring complex inquiries to senior staff as needed.
* Participate in meetings and contribute to team discussions.
* Plan and prioritize work, training, and audits, responding to routine and urgent needs.
* Encourage professional development and support the adoption of new technologies.
* Report incidents and adverse events.
* Maintain safety standards, participate in risk assessments, and ensure equipment is operated as per SOPs.
Person Specification
Experience
* Understanding of the clinical significance of results and ability to interpret them in a lone working setting.
* Confidence to make decisions aligned with guidelines, including blood film morphology and coagulation assays.
Qualifications
* HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist with a Biomedical degree or equivalent, with evidence of CPD and post-registration experience in Haematology.
* For Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist roles, possession of a Specialist Portfolio in Haematology with or without Blood Transfusion, or equivalent qualifications such as the BBTS Specialist Certificate.
