Assistant Scientific Officer (ASO) - Diagnostic Virology Branch: Disease Surveillance & Investigation Branch (DSIB) Location: VSD, Stormont Salary: £26,499 Hours: 37 hours per week (9am-5pm, Monday to Friday) About the Role The DSIB Virology Section provides statutory and diagnostic services to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), the farming community, and commercial clients. The work includes testing samples for the presence of viruses, viral antibodies, suspected epizootic and notifiable diseases such as Johne's disease. The section is also a designated laboratory for testing bovine tissue samples for Bovine Viral Diarrhoea Virus (BVDV) as part of the compulsory eradication programmes in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and Scotland, as well as the voluntary BVDfree England scheme. This role is critical in supporting AFBI's diagnostic and statutory service delivery, ensuring timely and accurate laboratory results. Key Responsibilities Receive, sort, and record incoming samples, ensuring accurate data capture and logging of non-conformances. Input sample data into the DSIB DU Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and prepare samples for testing. Carry out a broad range of microbiological techniques in line with laboratory protocols. Work to standards required by ISO17025, maintaining quality assurance at all times. Contribute to timely delivery of diagnostic results within agreed schedules. Adhere to all relevant health and safety regulations for microbiological laboratories. Maintain accurate laboratory records, including use of Excel spreadsheets, scanning, filing, and emailing of client paperwork. Support laboratory housekeeping, including waste disposal, routine cleanliness, equipment calibration, and maintenance. Perform any other duties required by management to support laboratory operations. Essential Criteria A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent), including a science subject. Effective communication skills (both written and verbal). Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Flexibility to adapt working hours when required. Desirable Criteria A general science background. Previous experience in a laboratory environment. Why Join AFBI?
