About the team and what we do

Our General Counsel Team plays a central role in supporting the organisation to deliver its regulatory purpose with confidence, integrity and fairness. We provide strategic, practical and high-quality legal advice across the organisation, helping colleagues navigate complex legal, operational and reputational issues.

The team works across a diverse portfolio of work including regulatory case issues, litigation, public law, equality and human rights, governance, contracts, procurement, information law and organisational policy development. We are a collaborative and supportive team that values learning, inclusion and professional growth.

You’ll work closely with experienced Principal Legal Advisers and Senior Lawyers who will support your development and help you build expertise across a broad range of legal disciplines.

Your role and impact

As a Lawyer within the General Counsel Team, you’ll provide high-quality, timely and solution-focused legal advice that supports strategic decision-making and helps mitigate legal risk across the organisation.

No two days are the same. You’ll work on a varied and intellectually stimulating caseload, advising on complex regulatory matters, supporting major organisational projects and contributing to policy, guidance and legislative development. You’ll also play an important role in supporting litigation and legal challenges, working with internal stakeholders and external legal advisers where needed.

Your work will directly contribute to protecting the public, supporting effective regulation and helping the organisation respond confidently to complex and evolving legal issues.

In this role, you will:

* Provide clear, practical and risk-based legal advice across a broad range of complex matters
* Support organisational projects and programmes by identifying legal risks and helping shape effective solutions
* Draft legal documents, guidance, contracts, presentations and training materials
* Contribute to litigation and external legal challenges, including supporting court and tribunal proceedings
* Build strong working relationships across the organisation and with external stakeholders
* Support organisational learning by sharing legal insight and contributing to legal knowledge management

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys variety, values collaboration and wants to make a meaningful impact through their legal work.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for a qualified solicitor or barrister with strong legal judgement, excellent communication skills and a genuine commitment to public service and regulatory work.

You’ll bring:

* Experience of providing high-quality legal advice in a regulatory, public law or similarly complex environment
* Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret legislation, case law and regulatory principles confidently
* The ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly and practically to a range of audiences
* A collaborative and inclusive approach, with the ability to build effective relationships across teams and stakeholders
* Sound decision-making skills and the ability to balance legal risk, proportionality and organisational priorities
* The ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment
* Professional integrity, adaptability and a strong sense of accountability

Experience in areas such as public law, equality and human rights, information law, procurement or professional regulation would be particularly valuable.

Salary Details:

* London - £56,174 - £62,416.
* Edinburgh - £52,241- £58,046.

Please note that this role requires you to review and work with sensitive and distressing material relating to fitness to practice cases and you will be given the appropriate support to deal with this material.
