Trust Doctor (CT1) - Urology

Applications are invited for the post of Urology Trust Doctor within the Surgical Division at Sunderland. This is a 12-month position. The successful applicants will participate in a joint on-call rota working across three directorates, providing excellent learning opportunities while supporting elective procedures within your chosen team.
The posts represent an opportunity for a CT-equivalent surgical trainee to gain experience in a large acute hospital, including emergency and elective practice. The successful applicant will be guided by an Educational and Clinical Supervisor and will have access to educational opportunities comparable to Foundation Programme teaching at year 2 level. The post holder will also attend departmental surgery teaching sessions, participate in Morbidity and Mortality meetings, and present audits.
The Surgical Division is dynamic and forward-thinking, prioritizing education, innovation, change, clinical effectiveness, and efficiency. It is committed to delivering patient-centric care and improving access to services for the local population. The successful candidate will support senior colleagues in shaping and maintaining these services.
Main duties of the job
Urology is one of three tertiary centres for Urology in the North East, offering a range of clinical sub-specialties. It has a 27-bed ward, three outpatient units, and three dedicated theatres, including a Robotic Suite. The department has recently introduced new services such as a rapid access unit, one-stop clinics, and robotic surgical procedures.
We seek dynamic and enthusiastic candidates who can contribute to the development of the unit. Participation in clinical audits and publication of papers is encouraged.
You will participate in the junior doctor on-call rota, gaining valuable insight into urology services.

Job responsibilities

* Full shift working pattern (40 hours), including ward management, emergency care, and outpatient/ theatre sessions.
* Participation in the Urology first-on-call tier and night shift cover.
* Responsibility to the Clinical Director.
* Deliver clinical care to Urology wards, managing both planned and emergency admissions.
* Provide emergency urology management for A&E and GP services in South Tyneside and Sunderland.
* Cover the Urology first on-call rota during night shifts.
* Attend educational sessions, contribute to departmental teaching, and support junior colleagues.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Primary Medical Qualification (MBBS or equivalent).
* MRCS Part 1.
Teaching/Research/Audit
* Willingness to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Experience in audit and research, with understanding of audit principles.
* Exposure to various teaching methods and groups.
Knowledge
* Strong general medical knowledge.
* Clinical competence and evidence-based practice awareness.
* Recognition of own limitations and broad experience.
Profession/Registration
* Full GMC registration valid through the appointment period.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate punctuality.
* Clear motivation to work as a Trust Doctor in Urology.
Skills
* Competence to work under supervision.
* Manual dexterity, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
* Experience in clinical risk management and research.
* Empathy, non-judgemental attitude, enthusiasm for learning, and teamwork skills.
