Nurse Specialist - Acute Oncology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic, dynamic and self-motivated nurse to join the expanding Acute Oncology team for the Newcastle NHS Trust as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The role of the Acute Oncology clinical nurse specialist provides urgent assessment, rapid initial management and appropriate specialist input for any patient presenting acutely unwell with problems relating to their cancer or cancer treatment.
The post holder will work as part of a dynamic team, assessing patients on a busy assessment area within NCCC who present acutely unwell. The post holder will have excellent time management and communication skills and be able to work under pressure.
The post holder will work autonomously providing support and advice to colleagues working across areas such as ED, SDEC, and inpatient ward areas, for unscheduled oncological/hematological emergency admission with regards to the following:
* Complications related to cancer treatment
* Complications of cancer
* Suspected malignancy of unknown origin
* MSCC

Main duties of the job
* Work as part of the acute oncology team across both sites (Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman), over seven days a week, including bank holidays
* The post holder will provide specialist, expert nursing care and support for patients with an oncological/hematological diagnosis, attending acutely unwell. You will advise and support clinical colleagues on the investigation, care and management of this group of patients
* Providing ongoing education of colleagues at all levels across the trust will be a central component
* Possess excellent communication skills and be able to communicate complex and sensitive information
* Possess critical thinking skills
* Manage an independent workload
* Work well as part of a team
* Provide specialist knowledge and support to patients via the emergency triage phone
* You will work closely with the oncology/haematology team and wider MDT
* Support with the development, promotion and delivery of the new acute oncology service

Job responsibilities
The post holder should have sound communication skills, in order to manage complex conversation and undertake thorough telephone triage assessment and provide robust education to the multi-disciplinary team.
You will be expected to collect data to measure clearly defined objectives in order to monitor and maintain high standards of care and deliver high quality patient experience.
You must be an experienced registered nurse who has at least two year experience in Oncology and or Haematology and be willing to work long days (8‑8) covering a 7-Day service including bank holidays.
History taken and clinical skills qualification would be desirable but not essential as training will be provided.

KNOWLEDGE
* oMeets Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for mentorship if relevant to role
* oEvidence of on‑going continuous professional development

* oHas understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding
SKILLS
* oEffective report writing skills
* oAble to work independently and as a member of a team

* oCurrent driving licence if relevant to role

EXPERIENCE
* oSome post registration experience within related specialist area of practice
* oExtended clinical practice underpinned by training and assessment
* oResearch or audit experience
* oEvidence of contribution towards education and training programmes
QUALIFICATIONS
* oRegistered Nurse (appropriate to branch)
* oCurrent NMC registration
* oDiploma plus specialist qualifications / experience within specialist area; prepared to take degree level study
* oDegree in health related subject
