We are recruiting for a part-time Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Learning Disability Service, based in Oxford. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key leadership role within a well-established multidisciplinary service supporting adults with learning disabilities across Oxfordshire.

You will provide senior clinical leadership, delivering high-quality, person-centred care while working collaboratively with a skilled team of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, therapists and partner agencies. The role offers a varied caseload, involving complex assessments, treatment planning and clinical supervision, alongside opportunities to contribute to service development, teaching and quality improvement.

Main duties of the job

* Provide senior medical input and clinical leadership to the Learning Disability Team (LDT). Medical responsibility for patients usually remains with the GP, except where a medical member of the LDT takes a patient on for continuing treatment. The post holder will have responsibility for those patients seen by themselves, together with those patients seen by medical staff directly supervised by the post holder.
* Work alongside the Team Manager and the other Consultant Psychiatrists in the Community LDTs to ensure the effective functioning and development of the service.
* Contribute to the collection of data as required by the Trust and other relevant agencies. This includes the timely recording of clinical activity data, and participation in clinical audit with appropriate administrative support.
* Attend most regular directorate managerial meeting as necessary, particularly Joint Consultant Committee, Medical Staff Committee and Directorate/Managerial liaison meeting.
* Participate in and attend the local training programme for junior doctors, aCPD peer group and a clinical supervision group with fellow consultants.
* Maintain your own programme of training and CPD accreditation with the support of their Lead consultant/Associate Medical Director/Clinical Director.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities


Community Learning Disability Teams

Professional staff working with adults with a learning disability are currently organised into two community teams throughout the County, serving North and west Oxfordshire (Banbury, Bicester and Witney), and Oxford City and South Oxfordshire (based in Oxford and Abingdon). Each team consists of psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, community LD nursing, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and admin. The teams provide assessment, consultation and therapeutic services to adults with a learning disability and their carers. The current post which is an established role is within the City and South Oxfordshire LDT which covers the City and South Oxfordshire areas and has an open case load of around 350 or which around 150 at any time have need for psychiatric input. This post would be to provide consultant support to the city area with support from 1 full time speciality doctor. The south area is supported by a full time consultant with 0.6 speciality doctor support.


Intensive Support Team (IST)

Provides services across both CLDTS.


A Medium secure facility, Evenlode

For up to 10 people with a learning disability and forensic history from Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire. It is situated on the Littlemore Hospital site and forms part of the Adult Mental Health medium secure unit, this service and the Forensic community Learning disability team are managed via the forensic directorate. It provides a structured therapeutic and secure environment for the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of people with mild learning disabilities who have been charged with an offence.

Qualifications and Registration


Essential criteria

* Medical degree
* Fully registered with the General Medical Council
* Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview).
* Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
* Eligible for Section 12 Approval (Mental Health Act)/ Approved Clinician or willing to apply for such approval once in post.


Desirable criteria

* MSc or higher degree


Knowledge and Experience


Essential criteria

* Experience of clinical work in specialty at SpR, SAS/Specialist grade or consultant level within the last 3 years
* Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
* Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices
* Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry


Desirable criteria

* Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health
* Experience of working at consultant level in an inpatient environment.


Teaching and Research


Essential criteria

* Experience in teaching resident doctors
* Experience of teaching medical undergraduates and postgraduates
* Experience of teaching non-medical mental health professionals
* Experience of research work and/or ability to interpret research findings and apply them to clinical practice.
* Audit or other quality improvement experience


Desirable criteria

* Medical education qualification
* Experience of grant-funded project work
