Job Summary
We are recruiting a full‑time (37.5 hours per week) Radiology Assistant. A 30‑hour post may become available soon and will welcome applications. You will assist radiographers/radiologists with clinical fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, mobile x‑ray imaging and interventional procedures, as well as supporting patients in the x‑ray rooms, attending diagnostic procedures, cleaning and manual handling. The Radiology department is integral to the hospital service and is well equipped with all modalities, producing high‑quality images. Contact Laura Edwards on 01691 404472 for informal enquiries. Existing NHS employees on Band 3 or above may be eligible.
Main Responsibilities
* Assist radiographers/radiologists with clinical fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, mobile x‑ray imaging and interventional procedures.
* Help in x‑ray rooms, support patients attending diagnostic procedures (inpatients, outpatients), and assist with cleaning and manual handling.
* Assist with patient care and equipment transfer within the department.
* Assist with clinical lists, aseptic/interventional, spinal injury etc.
* Help organise the filing system and destruction policy.
* Ensure smooth running of routine and interventional lists, including preparing, maintaining and restoring rooms, patients and images.
* Ensure sufficient supplies reach all work areas so the service runs smoothly.
* Create medico‑legal CD copying imaging.
* Occasionally assist at the front‑reception desk and retrieve images from digital and film files.
* Replenish all stock and non‑stock items, liaise with the Superintendent Radiographer, remove stock deliveries to the designated area and ensure stock rotation.
* Maintain the storeroom so it is clean, tidy and stock is stored safely within health and safety/CoSHH guidelines; collect supplies from CSSD when needed.
* Develop knowledge of radiation protection, equipment and procedures; participate in QA and audit programmes.
* Occasionally run departmental/trust film copying service, including medico‑legal/record copying and digitisation, ensuring a 40‑day response clause is met.
* Respond to enquiries from solicitors or medical personnel and maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with Trust policy.
* Support radiographers/radiologists in examination rooms, set up equipment, aid patient positioning, and enter exams into the computer system.
* Assist with transfer of sterile equipment from TSSU to the department, returning used items for re‑sterilisation, and chase up missing items.
* Comply with all legislative obligations including Data Protection Act, Health and Safety, CoSHH, Manual Handling Regulations, Professional Registration and radiation rules.
* Co‑operate with all measures the Trust takes to maintain a safe working environment, including use of manual handling equipment and personal protective equipment.
* Engage in continuous professional development, audit and improvement of services.
Person Specification
* Essential knowledge: Hospital environment and medical terminology; understanding of and commitment to confidentiality and data security requirements.
* Desirable knowledge: Radiation safety awareness.
* Essential qualifications: GCSE or equivalent in English & Mathematics grade C or above; NVQ level 2 in Health Care or equivalent.
* Essential skills: Patient care skills, empathy, negotiation; good forward planning and workload prioritisation; high‑volume work handling; excellent oral and written communication; interpersonal skills; problem solving; flexibility; unsupervised work; IT literacy.
* Essential personal qualities: Assertiveness; empathy and negotiation; good forward planning and workload prioritisation; team working.
* Desirable personal qualities: Driving licence.
