Post: Executive Director and Co-CEO
Accountable to: Board of Trustees
Responsible for: Creative Producer and volunteers (shared line management with the Artistic Director)
Salary: ₤26,500 per annum – it is anticipated that this will increase to a higher level as selected candidate and their co-CEO improve the financial performance of the organisation.
Term: Permanent
Main work location: Onsite at the main venue and some at other nearby venues.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week. Some evening/weekend work will be required.
Purpose of post:
To lead the administrative and planning aspects of the organisation and to work collaboratively with the Artistic Director to lead the Space’s strategic vision, mission and objectives. A principal objective is to increase the revenues of the organisation to ensure sustainability and growth.
Main duties:
1. Marketing and communications
· Defining and promoting Space events, workshops, facilities and membership schemes
· Communicating effectively with customers and service users, other staff and volunteers, trust members, and suppliers personally and by telephone, e-mail and written correspondence
· Supporting the preparation of both online and offline promotional material, including social media that relates to the general organisation (specific production marketing activities will be led by the AD)
· Supporting the organisation of promotional events, including season launches
· Defining and driving the implementation of the audience development strategy
2. Community Engagement/Participation
· Building relationships with local organisations in private, public and third sectors.
· Working with partner organisations to build and strengthen collaborative activities and initiatives.
· Promoting activities and communicating regularly with participants.
· Supporting tutors and other staff in the management of community activities.
· Monitoring the activities and reporting on progress.
· Assisting in the recruitment and management of volunteers
· Market the cafe-bar to local residents and maintain a programme of events, offers and promotions
3. Finance and Fundraising
· Together with the Artistic Director and Treasurer to ensure the financial stability and viability of the organisation. To lead on the preparation of the annual budget.
· Ensuring the collection and recording of income, processing payments and maintaining associated records
· Controlling petty cash and maintaining associated records
· Ensuring maintenance of the invoice register
· Completing financial reports and banking
· Researching and writing funding applications and supervising freelance fund raisers
· Managing other fundraising activities including sponsorship campaigns, crowdfunding, fundraising events and individual giving
· Participating as a director of the subsidiary trading company and working with its directors and staff to maximise income generation form trading activities
· Identifying and developing other sources of income
4. Premises & facilities management
· Maintaining furniture and equipment including IT equipment, photocopier, stage lighting and sound, phone and security systems and managing associated records
· Managing a cleaning rota and undertaking cleaning as required to ensure the hall, foyer, balcony, offices and outside areas are kept to a good standard of cleanliness
· Sourcing quotes from external parties for maintenance work
· Maintain a schedule of room and performance space use to ensure smooth rehearsal, performance, community, and events use
· Managing the technical requirements of in-house and visiting theatre productions, responding to queries and problem-solving where necessary
· Managing the café bar and liaising with staff on issues relating to health and safety, building maintenance and compliance with all required laws and regulations. It is anticipated that the Executive Director will join the board of Directors of the trading company that runs the bar.
5. Administration
· Handling enquiries and taking bookings of Space facilities and ensuring effective responsiveness to stakeholders and service users
· Work collaboratively with the Artistic Director and Trustees to ensure the organisation meets its legal, regulatory and other compliance responsibilities.
· Monitoring the availability and condition of office equipment, arranging maintenance and keeping associated records
· Maintain and manage the organisations risk register
· Updating and maintaining the Space Operations Manual
· Supervision and deployment of volunteers
6. Strategic leadership
· Together with the Artistic Director and Trustees to develop and implement the strategic direction of The Space.
· Leading by example to motivate and guide staff and volunteers
· Working with the Artistic Director and Treasurer to agree and manage budgets and allocate resources effectively.
· Develop the long-term capital improvement plans and lead on capital project implementation when funds are available.
· Building and developing the Space’s brand identity.
· Together with the Artistic Director attend meetings of the Board of Trustees and ensure such reports and other information they require are prepared and distributed in good time.
· Support Space Productions, our in-house professional Theatre Company, in collaboration with the Artistic Director
· Support Space Works, our community-based access company, in collaboration with the Artistic Director
· Identify improvements to the organisation structure and ways of working.
7. General
· Undertaking such other duties appropriate to the post that may be reasonably required from time to time

As this post is part of a new structure in the organisation it should be expected that the role and responsibilities will evolve as the organisation matures.

9. Knowledge of arts administration gained in a minimum of 2 years’ experience, or relevant study course.

3. Identification and management of risk
4. Negotiating supplier contracts with general suppliers and artistic companies
5. Fundraising (including ACE and other grant awarding body processes)
6. Venue management, marketing and audience development
10. Self-sufficient in IT skills, standard office software and proper use of the internet

1. Completion and return of application form (with personal statement) and CV by 5pm, Friday 13th June 2025.
2. Selection of candidates for first round interview with two trustees at the Space (or remotely) in the week commencing 16th June. Specific dates and times will be arranged once application forms are received.
3. For shortlisted candidates, a second interview with trustees of the Space will take place during the week commencing 23rd June 2025 at the Space.
