Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for a Control System Developer – Vehicle Supervisory Controller to be based at our customer’s site in Gaydon.
Our Embedded Systems Solutions department (ESS) encompasses all activities outlined under the Automotive SPICE (ASPICE) process framework, including systems engineering, software engineering, coding, and all levels of functional testing. Beyond core development, ESS also integrates critical supporting processes such as project management, risk assessment, functional safety, and cybersecurity, ensuring compliance with ASPICE standards and delivering reliable, secure, and high-quality embedded systems & solutions.
The Role:
We are looking for a passionate and technically skilled Control System Developer to join our advanced electrified vehicle (xHEV) team. This role focuses on the development and integration of control strategies within the Vehicle Supervisory Controller (VSC), enabling optimal performance across thermal systems, energy management, torque coordination, and driver-selectable modes.
You will play a key role in shaping the behaviour of hybrid and electric vehicles, ensuring seamless coordination between subsystems, regulatory compliance, and an exceptional driving experience.
Area of Responsibility
Control Strategy Development
1. Design and implement control algorithms for xHEV systems including:
2. Thermal Management: coolant flow, HVAC coordination, battery thermal control
3. Energy Management: SOC control, regenerative braking, charge/discharge strategies
4. Torque Coordination: blending between ICE, electric motor, and transmission
5. Driver Modes: Eco, Sport, EV-only, and adaptive drive profiles
6. Develop models and simulations using MATLAB/Simulink, Stateflow, and embedded C
7. Ensure real-time performance, robustness, and fault tolerance of control logic
System Integration & Calibration
8. Collaborate with hardware, software, and calibration teams to integrate control functions into the VSC
9. Support calibration of control parameters to meet performance, efficiency, and drivability targets
10. Conduct system-level validation in MIL, SIL, HIL, and vehicle environments
Testing & Validation
11. Plan and execute test cases for control functions across various drive cycles and environmental conditions
12. Analyze vehicle data logs, debug issues, and refine control strategies based on test feedback
13. Use tools such as CANape, INCA, CANalyzer, and ETAS for diagnostics and validation
Documentation & Compliance
14. Maintain documentation for control requirements, design specifications, and validation reports
15. Ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards (., ISO 26262, UNECE R85, R101)
16. Support technical reviews and cross-functional design assessments
Knowledge / Experience
17. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field
18. Good experience in control system development for hybrid or electric vehicles
19. Strong proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, Stateflow, and embedded software development
20. Solid understanding of hybrid architectures (HEV, PHEV, MHEV) and vehicle control systems
21. Experience with vehicle communication protocols (CAN, LIN, FlexRay) and diagnostic tools
22. Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
23. Experience with VSC architecture and multi-domain control coordination
24. Familiarity with battery management systems (BMS), thermal modeling, and energy optimization techniques
25. Exposure to AUTOSAR, ISO 26262, and model-based development workflows
26. Hands-on experience with vehicle testing, calibration, and data analysis
27. Knowledge of AI/ML techniques for predictive energy or thermal control (a plus)
