Job Purpose

The School Librarian is responsible for managing and developing the school library as a vibrant learning resource centre that supports the academic and personal development of A-Level students. The role involves promoting a love of reading, supporting independent learning, and equipping students with strong information and digital literacy skills.

Key Responsibilities

Library Management

* Organise, maintain, and develop the library's print and digital resources to meet the needs of A-Level students and staff.
* Implement and maintain an effective library management system for cataloguing, lending, and stock control.
* Ensure the library is a welcoming, inclusive, and purposeful study environment.
* Monitor and manage the library budget efficiently, ensuring value for money in purchasing resources.

Learning & Curriculum Support

* Support teaching staff by sourcing and curating relevant resources to complement the A-Level curriculum.
* Deliver induction sessions and workshops to students on research skills, academic referencing, and critical evaluation of sources.
* Provide one-to-one guidance to students on independent study, essay writing, and accessing reliable information.
* Promote academic integrity, including awareness of plagiarism and responsible use of information.

Reading & Literacy Development

* Promote reading for pleasure and academic enrichment through reading lists, book clubs, displays, and events.
* Organise library-based activities, author visits, and initiatives to encourage engagement with literature and research.

Digital & Information Literacy

* Manage digital subscriptions, e-resources, and online databases, ensuring accessibility for staff and students.
* Support students in developing digital literacy and online research skills.
* Stay up to date with new technologies, information platforms, and trends in education and librarianship.

Administrative & Wider School Role

* Supervise and support students using the library, ensuring a safe and respectful learning environment.
* Train and oversee student library assistants or volunteers, where applicable.
* Collaborate with colleagues across the school to contribute to academic enrichment programmes.
* Ensure all safeguarding policies and procedures are followed at all times.

Person Specification – School Librarian

Qualifications and Training

* A degree in Librarianship, Information Science, English, Education, or a related field – essential.
* A professional librarianship or information management qualification (e.g., CILIP accredited) – desirable.
* Evidence of continued professional development in information literacy or education – desirable.
* Legal right to work in the UK is compulsory

Experience

* Experience working in a library or information service – essential.
* Experience in a school, sixth form, or higher education setting – desirable.
* Experience delivering information skills or study support sessions to students.
* Experience in managing budgets and resources effectively.

Knowledge & Skills

* Strong knowledge of library and information management systems.
* Understanding of the A-Level curriculum and resource needs – desirable.
* Excellent research, organisational, and cataloguing skills.
* Ability to teach and promote information literacy and study skills.
* Strong IT skills, including use of digital resources, e-libraries, and academic databases.
* Knowledge of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
