Job description
To lead and manage the daily operations of a petrol station and convenience store, ensuring a safe, efficient, and customer-focused environment. The Store Manager is responsible for delivering sales targets, maintaining high standards of compliance and service, managing staff, and ensuring smooth fuel and retail operations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Operational Management
* Oversee daily operations of the forecourt and store, including fuel sales, convenience retail, and car wash (if applicable).
* Ensure all health & safety, environmental, and legal compliance standards are strictly followed.
* Manage cash handling, banking procedures, and daily financial reporting.
* Conduct daily site checks and audits (e.g. wet stock, dry stock, HSE checklists).
* Monitor and maintain fuel stock levels, ordering as necessary to prevent outages.
Staff Management
* Recruit, train, and supervise a team of customer assistants, supervisors, and shift leaders.
* Manage staff rotas to ensure adequate cover while controlling labour costs.
* Conduct regular team meetings, performance reviews, and training sessions.
* Ensure adherence to company policies and procedures by all team members.
Customer Service & Sales
* Maintain high levels of customer service and address any complaints or incidents promptly.
* Implement sales initiatives and promotions to drive revenue.
* Maintain strong knowledge of products and services, ensuring the team is fully trained to upsell and advise customers.
* Ensure the store is always clean, well-stocked, and merchandised to standard.
Compliance & Reporting
* Ensure compliance with all fuel licensing, tobacco, alcohol, and lottery regulations.
* Report incidents (e.g. drive-offs, fuel spills, health & safety concerns) in a timely and accurate manner.
* Liaise with contractors, suppliers, and head office departments as needed.
* Keep accurate logs of maintenance issues and ensure timely resolution.
Experience & Qualifications:Essential:
* Minimum 2 years' experience in a retail or forecourt management role.
* Strong understanding of fuel station operations, including wet stock management and forecourt safety.
* Proven ability to lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment.
* Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
* Strong numerical and financial acumen (e.g. cash handling, P&L awareness)
Desirable:
* Prior experience in a branded petrol station (e.g. BP, Shell, Esso, Texaco).
* Working knowledge of EPOS systems, wet stock systems (e.g. Fairbanks), and back-office systems.
* Basic health & safety or first aid certification.
