As a Legal Counsel, you will play a pivotal role in providing expert legal advice and commercial guidance across the business. You will lead on negotiating, drafting, and reviewing complex contracts, support regulatory compliance, and help drive strategic projects that shape the company’s growth. Working closely with senior management and key stakeholders, you will provide pragmatic solutions to complex legal and commercial challenges, while mentoring a junior team member and contributing to the continuous improvement of legal processes. Day to Day
* Partner with teams across the organisation to provide clear, commercially focused legal guidance. Engage directly with a range of external stakeholders including suppliers, customers, insurers, regulators, and external legal counsel.
* Lead the negotiation, drafting, review, and interpretation of a wide range of commercial contracts and terms of business.
* Work closely with suppliers, customers, licensors, marketing agencies, and regulatory bodies, ensuring all agreements align with Project Better Energy’s governance framework and are delivered within agreed timelines.
* Contribute to the execution and enhancement of the Project Better Energy Compliance Programme, ensuring ongoing alignment with FCA governance requirements and broader regulatory obligations.
* Provide pragmatic legal advice across the Group on diverse matters, including supply chain, contractual, and commercial disputes, with a focus on achieving commercially sound and efficient resolutions.
* Identify and implement legal and operational process improvements to support business growth, enhance efficiency, and align with the wider company strategy. Proactively develop initiatives to manage increasing workload and optimise team performance.
* Maintain regular communication with the Head of Legal & Compliance, ensuring they are fully informed of all material legal matters and ongoing projects.
* Provide high-quality legal input to Senior Management on key projects and strategic initiatives, contributing to business decision-making and risk management.
* Manage and mentor one direct report of a Paralegal, overseeing workload allocation, performance, and professional development to ensure delivery of an efficient, high-performing legal function.
What will you bring?
* Qualified Solicitor with 3+ years post-qualification experience (or equivalent), with a Law degree or non-legal degree plus GDL and LPC.
* Proven experience drafting, negotiating, and advising on complex commercial contracts, including multi-jurisdictional agreements.
* Strong track record in resolving disputes and providing practical, commercially focused legal solutions.
* Experience operating within regulated environments (e.g., FCA, ICO, CMA).
* Broad commercial legal knowledge
* Knowledge of employment and property matters (desirable).
* Knowledge or interest in the renewable energy sector (desirable).
* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with ability to influence and build strong relationships at all levels.
* Strategic thinker with the ability to provide innovative solutions to complex challenges.
* Confident decision-maker, able to prioritise and deliver under pressure and tight deadlines.
* Proactive team player who can mentor and guide junior colleagues while leading on key projects.
* Highly organised with excellent attention to detail.
* Positive, adaptable, and motivated to develop personally and inspire others.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Outlook and Word.
