🚆 Head of Drivers – Senior Leadership Opportunity
We’re seeking an experienced and highly credible Head of Drivers to take on a pivotal leadership role within a major UK rail operation.
Location: 2 days working from home and 3 days on site covering London and Birmingham.
This is a critical senior position with full accountability for the safe, effective and compliant operation of the Driver workforce, setting the strategic direction for safety, performance, service reliability and customer experience across a complex, unionised environment.
🔑 The Role
As Head of Drivers, you will:
* Provide visible, inspirational leadership across the Driver function, setting clear standards for safety, performance and behaviour
* Lead cultural and organisational change, driving high performance and addressing issues decisively
* Own the Driver resourcing and deployment strategy, overseeing recruitment and mitigating operational risk
* Drive continuous improvement in train safety, service reliability and customer satisfaction
* Act as the principal interface with ASLEF, leading employee relations activity and chairing Driver Company Council meetings
* Ensure full compliance with safety, operational and regulatory requirements, including Level 3 on-call responsibility
* Provide strategic oversight of performance management, talent development and succession planning
You’ll be a proven senior leader with:
* Significant experience leading large, diverse teams in safety-critical, unionised environments
* Strong employee relations expertise, with deep knowledge of Drivers’ terms & conditions and ASLEF engagement
* A track record of leading change, managing performance and confidently addressing underperformance
* Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills
* Strong understanding of rail operations, safety and quality standards, combined with analytical and problem-solving capability
