Key Responsibilities – Automation & Controls Engineering Solutions in the Water Sector Design, develop, test and commission industrial software controls solutions for water sector automation projects, including PLC programming, SCADA and HMI development. Work closely with multidisciplinary teams—including process, electrical and mechanical engineers—to deliver fully integrated automation systems that meet and exceed client needs. Create and review high-quality technical documentation including control philosophies, user manuals, electrical schematics and functional design specifications. Support the full project lifecycle for automation controls – from initial concept and technical specification through to commissioning and client handover. Participate in site surveys, commissioning activities and client FAT/SAT testing to ensure robust, compliant and safe system delivery. Troubleshoot and resolve issues in both new and existing automation/control systems within the water industry environment. Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to understand requirements, drive industry best practice, and ensure customer satisfaction at all stages of project delivery. Essential Skills & Experience for Software Controls Engineers Relevant engineering qualification (Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent) in Electrical, Controls, Automation, or related discipline. Practical experience designing and implementing industrial control systems using PLC, SCADA and HMI platforms (e.g. Siemens, Rockwell, Schneider, Mitsubishi or similar), ideally within the water, utilities, or comparable process industries. Knowledge of software engineering for automation, including coding, troubleshooting, simulation and validation. Clear communicator—able to engage confidently with clients, stakeholders and colleagues across all disciplines. Proactive problem-solver, analytical thinker, and comfortable working under pressure to meet deadlines and quality standards. Full UK driving licence to travel to client/project sites across Hampshire and the South as required. Desirable Experience for Automation and Controls Engineering Careers Knowledge of water industry standards, regulations and digitalisation initiatives Experience integrating automation controls with industrial networks.
