Lead Engineer for River Restoration and Nature Schemes
We are seeking an experienced Lead Engineer for River Restoration and Nature Schemes to join our UK Water team. The role focuses on delivering high‑quality project delivery and engineering for nature schemes, working with a multidisciplinary team to manage all stages of planning, modelling, designing and supervising construction of nature recovery, rewilding and river restoration projects.
Responsibilities
* Environmental engineering for nature recovery, restoration, rewilding, geomorphology and hydromorphology schemes.
* River and wetland restoration.
* River and watercourse engineering, detailed design and compliance with CDM regulations.
* Preparation of designs, design safety, work schedules and contractor specifications.
* Supervision of contractors and construction works.
* Project management across all project stages.
Projects
* Re‑meandering detailed design and construction supervision for the River Breamish (River Till‑Tweed SSSI and SAC) in Northumberland.
* Re‑meandering detailed design and construction supervision for the River Eye SSSI in Leicestershire.
* Nature recovery, river restoration and countryside management for large estates in Northumberland.
* Weir removals and fish passes across England, Wales and Scotland, including around internationally designated sites.
* River basin‑scale restoration planning for the Environment Agency and multiple water companies.
* Programme of WFD, BNG and MoRPh surveys for river restoration across the UK and Ireland.
* River management plans, river crossing designs, landslide and flood hazard analysis in New Zealand.
Qualifications
* Degree in a relevant subject (e.g., civil engineering).
* Proven experience in river and waterway restoration with compliance to design standards.
* Extensive project management and delivery experience.
* Leadership in CDM and design safety.
* Excellent communication, engagement and leadership skills with multidisciplinary technical teams, clients and stakeholders.
