We are seeking an experienced and motivated Instrument Technician to join the Central Teaching Laboratories (CTL) team at the University of Liverpool. This senior technical role is central to delivering a wide range of practical teaching activities across Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences, supporting large cohorts of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

You will provide expert technical support, ensure the smooth day-to-day running of facilities, and play a key role in supervising and developing technical staff. They will be responsible for the maintenance of facilities and essential equipment within the CTL, ensuring faults are resolved and repairs are carried out in a timely and cost-effective manner. As a specialist user of complex equipment, the candidate will provide technical oversight, training, and supervision to staff and students, while also contributing to the design and implementation of new experimental setups and supporting the continual enhancement of technical services.

This is a leadership-focused position that requires excellent organisational skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving to manage and maintain a wide range of specialised equipment and resources. The role involves regular liaison with academic and technical colleagues to support teaching delivery, ensure the effective use of laboratory space and equipment, and help implement safe working practices in line with institutional, legal, and environmental guidelines. The post-holder will also deputise for the CTL Supervisor when required, act as deputy safety coordinator, and lead initiatives such as inventory management, staff training, and the coordination of maintenance schedules.

The CTL is a flagship facility at the University of Liverpool, designed to support innovative, high-quality science education. Delivering large-scale undergraduate laboratory teaching across multiple disciplines, while also supporting postgraduate taught programmes, schools outreach activities, academic conferences, and public engagement events. This vibrant and collaborative environment brings together staff and students from across the Faculty of Science and Engineering, fostering interdisciplinary learning and ensuring an outstanding practical teaching experience.
