Clinical Psychologist/Forensic Psychologist/Counselling Psychologist – Band 7
North London NHS Foundation Trust (NLFT) invites applications for an enthusiastic Band 7 clinical psychologist to a permanent post within the friendly and highly experienced talking therapies service in HMP Brixton. The role integrates within a multidisciplinary mental health hub that includes psychiatry, nursing, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy.
Key responsibilities include providing individual and group therapeutic interventions, delivering specialist assessments, liaising with multidisciplinary teams, supporting the development of a new 8‑bed in‑patient unit, and contributing to research and service evaluation initiatives. Previous experience working in restrictive settings is advantageous, though newly qualified psychologists are also welcomed.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will support the delivery of care through Integrated Care Pathways, ensuring compliance with London-wide prison healthcare standards. They will provide specialist psychological assessment and therapy, offer advice and consultation to non‑psychological colleagues, support senior staff, supervise junior staff, and apply research skills for audit, policy, service development, and research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical
* Conduct specialist psychological assessments using complex data from tests, self‑report measures, observations, and interviews.
* Formulate and implement treatment plans based on evidence‑based conceptual frameworks across all care settings.
* Deliver psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families, and groups, refining formulations and maintaining provisional hypotheses.
* Evaluate and decide on treatment options considering theoretical and therapeutic models and complex factors.
* Provide specialist psychological advice and consultation to other professionals to support formulation, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
* Contribute to a psychologically based framework across all settings and agencies, including in‑patient settings.
* Conduct risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and advise on psychological aspects of risk assessments.
* Act as care coordinator where appropriate, initiating and reviewing care plans under CPA.
Consultation, Teaching, Training, and Supervision
* Provide consultation and training to other professionals on psychological interventions.
* Receive regular clinical professional supervision from a senior clinical psychologist and other senior colleagues.
* Develop specialist experience and skills relevant to clinical psychology and the service.
* Offer professional and clinical supervision to junior members and other MDT staff.
* Contribute to pre‑ and post‑qualification teaching of clinical, counselling, and/or forensic psychology.
* Provide advice, consultation, and training to staff across agencies and settings.
Person Specification – Qualifications
* Doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology OR Doctoral or Masters level training in forensic psychology with full competencies completed OR Doctoral training in Counselling Psychology.
* Additional training in working with neurodiversity (e.g. ADOS, ADIR).
Person Specification – Experience (Clinical)
* Specialist psychological assessment and treatment across various care settings (outpatient, community, primary care, inpatient).
* Experience with diverse client groups and maintaining professionalism in emotionally charged or violent contexts.
* Experience working within a forensic setting or prison environment, ideally in a B7 role or as a trainee.
* Experience teaching, training, and supervising or consulting with other professional groups.
Person Specification – Experience (Personal Qualities)
* Ability to contain, explore, and formulate high‑level distress both directly with patients and indirectly via supervision or case reviews.
* Flexible, engaging, approachable, and responsive to clients and the multidisciplinary team.
* Experience with neurodiversity and assessing autistic adults, ADHD, and/or intellectual disabilities.
* Ability to apply psychology in different cultural contexts.
References will be required for the last three years of employment/training, including at least one from the current or most recent employer. If unemployed for more than four years, a character referee (non‑family) may be provided.
