Senior/Principal Sustainability Consultant
Location: Bristol, Exeter or Taunton – flexible working allowing a mix of home and office.
Responsibilities
* Lead the embedment of environmental sustainability into the delivery of local government contracts.
* Support the Local Government Sector Sustainability Lead and coordinate best‑practice roll‑outs across all local government contracts.
* Advise local transport authorities on decarbonising transport and infrastructure in line with carbon budgets and net zero targets.
* Align transport decarbonisation and climate resilience with other client policy agendas such as green energy and cost‑of‑living initiatives.
* Support the development and continual improvement of WSP's local government sustainability and transport decarbonisation offerings.
* Provide training to WSP colleagues and clients on carbon reduction.
* Collaborate with teams in Local Government and Transport & Mobility to identify optimal solutions for climate change challenges.
* Lead decarbonisation projects and tasks such as carbon assessment, scheme management, climate risk screening and development of new tools and guidance.
* Grow business by strengthening client relationships, shaping new opportunities and providing sustainability inputs to strategic bids.
* Manage development of fee proposals to clients, coordinating technical and commercial responses.
* Build a collaborative, carbon‑conscious culture across the wider Local Government team and champion best‑practice approaches company‑wide.
Qualifications & Experience
The successful candidate will have strong technical experience in whole‑life carbon assessment and PAS2080 carbon management, with experience working with local government and an understanding of the broader context of transport decarbonisation. The role is best suited to someone with a background in carbon assessment, sustainability, environmental or transport planning and a passion for mitigating and adapting to climate change in the transport sector.
* Strong experience relating to carbon assessment and PAS2080 carbon management.
* Experience in technical leadership roles, scoping and reviewing technical outputs, resolving complex issues pragmatically.
* Experience in project management and client‑facing roles, communicating complex information in concise, plain‑language summaries.
* Experience upskilling others, ideally on environmental sustainability.
* Understanding of Net Zero principles in a transport and local government context.
* Knowledge of local highways and transport services.
* Strong analytical skills and ability to innovate beyond traditional processes.
* Confidence working in complex, cross‑disciplinary project teams and upskilling staff on decarbonisation best practice.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Deep interest in delivering Net Zero.
