A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing Mechanical Engineering function supporting complex, high-integrity defence products.
You will be leading mechanical design work packages across the full product life cycle and report to the senior engineering leadership team.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead complex mechanical design work packages from future concepts and detailed design through qualification, production and in-service support
* Drive technical direction and design maturity across multi-disciplinary engineering teams
* Ensure designs meet performance, safety, cost and schedule requirements
* Act as a key technical interface with manufacturing, quality, supply chain and external stakeholders
* Influence design decisions across the full product life cycle
* Support design proving and qualification activities
* Apply best practice design methodologies including DFMEA, DFA and DFM
* Engage with and develop suppliers and external partners
* Assess and manage technical risk while mentoring less experienced engineers
The ideal candidate would have:
* Degree, HND or HNC in Mechanical Engineering or similar
* Experience working across the full product life cycle from concept to in-service support
* Understanding of structural, thermal and/or dynamic analysis
* Experience with relevant 3D CAD and CAE tools
* Experience supporting supplier development and external technical collaboration
The ideal candidate must have:
* Proven ability to lead mechanical design work packages within multi-disciplinary teams
* Strong experience delivering robust mechanical solutions in complex engineering environments
* In-depth knowledge of design proving and qualification activities
* Hands-on experience applying DFMEA, DFA and DFM methodologies
* Strong communication skills with the ability to influence, negotiate and make technical decisions
* Ability to manage competing priorities and technical risk
