Position Summary:
A licensed medical doctor with ample experience in shipboard maritime medicine who will be responsible for providing medical support to the operation of the designated medical teams, as well as liaising and engaging with senior-level colleagues in hotel and maritime operations, local and regional government officials, and leaders of other external organizations, as needed. The support to the shipboard medical teams includes but is not limited to providing guidance to the doctors on the ships via emails, phone calls, and coverage of the helpline. This position does not make clinical decisions on the treatment of patients at any time or under any circumstances. Shoreside doctors provide guidance and leadership to the shipboard doctors. The final decision on the treatment of any patient, including the need to evacuate a patient, relies on the ship’s doctor(s).
Responsibilities include:
1. Providing medical advisory services to shipboard doctors across all Royal Caribbean Group brands.
2. Guiding shipboard doctors on the disembarkation of patients, including referrals and medical sign-off.
3. Advising on procedures to evacuate persons from a ship.
4. Guiding shipboard doctors on signing off crew members and providing end-of-contract medical referrals.
5. Offering advice on differential diagnoses, coordination of care, and treatment support (without making direct patient care decisions).
6. Participating in the review of surgical treatments for crew members, ensuring proper documentation.
7. Supporting crew wellness programs.
8. Providing regular on-call coverage for the helpline.
9. Consulting with the Public Health team on onboard infectious disease cases and outbreaks.
10. Supporting vaccination programs and reviewing pre-employment physicals.
11. Deploying to ships during illness outbreaks or emergencies.
12. Providing support for infectious disease cases, including chickenpox, measles, or tuberculosis.
13. Supporting medical and risk management teams.
14. Providing medical team training and education as needed.
15. Contributing to performance evaluations of shipboard medical staff.
16. Serving as liaison with health authorities and engaging with government officials.
17. Traveling with Public Health Authorities for ship inspections.
18. Supporting recruitment of medical staff.
19. Assessing medical facilities in relevant ports.
Qualifications:
* Licensed Medical Doctor.
* At least 5 years of experience as a shipboard Senior Doctor (preferred).
* Minimum of 10 years of experience as a medical practitioner.
* Familiarity with data collection, review, and analysis.
* Understanding of performance and outcomes measures.
* Ability to travel to ships for onsite support.
Knowledge and Skills:
* Ability to motivate and lead multifunctional teams remotely.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
Physical Demands:
Requires sitting, standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Must be able to write, review, and type reports, operate a PC, communicate, listen, and assess information. May need to lift or move weights of 10-25 pounds. Travel and work environments vary, including office, shipboard, and outdoor locations. Ability to work in high-noise environments and travel up to 60% of the time. Must maintain confidentiality and work in both office and marine environments.
