Independent Custody Visitor (Volunteer) The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) for Avon and Somerset is looking to recruit 4 new Independent Custody Visitors to join our Independent Custody Visiting Scheme 2 to be based at Bridgwater custody unit and 2 to be based at Keynsham custody unit. As an ICV, you will play a vital role in safeguarding the rights and welfare of people in police custody by making unannounced visits to custody suites - checking on the conditions in which a detainee is detained in custody, and their Rights, entitlements and welfare with reference to the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, 1984 (PACE) code of practice (Code) C (regarding Custody). Visits take place roughly once a month, in pairs. Custody visits are held within a seven-day period, either during the day or evening at a time to suit your personal schedule. The core responsibilities of this interesting and varied role are: To carry out custody visits to custody units in line with the Panel rota, Scheme guidelines and training received, averaging one visit per month. To carry out the duties of an Independent Custody Visitor as set out in the scheme’s handbook, giving due regard to Health and Safety requirements of the Custody Visiting Scheme and Custody Unit. To complete and submit any necessary documentation relating to the Scheme or in connection with the appointment process in a timely manner. To retain a good working relationship with key people (stakeholders), including Custody Visitor colleagues, the Police and Crime Commissioner’s staff, Custody Officers and any other interested groups or individuals. To attend and take an active part in at least two of the four Independent Custody Visitor Panel Meetings per year. Meetings may be in-person or remote/online. To commit to a three-year term as an Independent Custody Visitor. An optional two additional terms are permitted, totalling 9 years. What we are looking for We are looking for someone with strong communication skills who can work fairly and respectfully within legislation and regulations. IT proficiency is essential for online meetings and documentation. No previous experience is needed – just a commitment to fairness, confidentiality, and human rights.
