Job Description
Ultra Precision Control Systems (PCS) is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join the Engineering team. The role involves handling routine and non-routine situations independently, exercising personal responsibility and initiative, and challenging or introducing deviations from established practices when necessary.
The engineer will be technically responsible for ensuring compliance with engineering and development processes, and that designs are functionally correct, subject to independent review where appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare technical documents and develop product data independently, leading design efforts to meet project schedules and budgets.
* Apply and scrutinize project requirements, deriving new requirements as needed.
* Interface with operations and supply chain to ensure design intent and requirements are met, applying DFM/DFT practices.
* Lead the preparation and review of engineering estimates and bids, identifying risks and dependencies.
* Present ideas and proposals effectively, including at external design reviews.
* Coordinate with support functions like Commercial, Finance, and Supply Chain.
* Maintain awareness of PLM tools.
* Manage configuration, change control, and documentation security, coaching junior staff.
* Uphold security, export licensing, and ITAR compliance, coaching staff accordingly.
* Lead failure investigations and report findings to management and customers.
* Guide technical problem resolution and support other engineers in their domain.
* Lead large or complex work packages, ensuring schedule, budget, and quality targets.
* Author complex assemblies, drawings, and models using CAD tools, applying tolerances, and coaching juniors.
* Adhere to drawing and modeling standards, updating manuals, and training staff.
* Design electrical wiring assemblies per standards, work with PCBs and electromechanical designs, influencing PCB layout for testing.
* Perform FEA analysis and basic CFD understanding, coaching staff as needed.
* Design for manufacture and understand project lifecycles and discipline activities.
* Assess and manage technical risks, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
* Manage own and team’s work proactively, making timely decisions with financial awareness.
* Utilize relevant software tools effectively.
Some offsite travel may be required.
Required Skills & Experience
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, with significant relevant experience.
* Eligible for UK security clearance.
* Chartered engineer or equivalent preferred.
Desirable
* Experience in PCB & enclosure design, EMI & EMC considerations.
* Knowledge of aerospace materials and manufacturing methods.
* Understanding of airworthiness and safety standards like DO-160.
