The role

Overview

We are seeking to recruit a permanent Medical engineer to support the existing teams within Clinical Technology.

The department of Clinical Technology provides a comprehensive medical equipment management and maintenance service to the University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) and external healthcare bodies, based at both the Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital sites. Multidisciplinary teams of medical engineers deliver maintenance and support across the organisation and to other local healthcare providers.

Responsibilities

The post holder will be an integral member of the newly established Beds Team within Clinical Technology, supporting the safe and effective maintenance, testing, repair, and deployment of hospital beds and associated accessories across the Trust.

Working under the direction of the Beds Team Leader, the role will deliver day‑to‑day technical activities in line with Trust policies, agreed procedures, manufacturers’ instructions, and relevant standards. The post holder will contribute to ensuring that beds are safe, fit for purpose, and available to support clinical services, with a strong focus on patient safety and service continuity.

The role will involve planned preventative maintenance, asset tracking, and accurate record keeping within the clinical asset management system. The post holder will work closely with ward staff, Infection Prevention and Control, Estates, and other support services to ensure beds are maintained, cleaned, and returned to service in a timely manner.

This role will also support the introduction of standardised processes and governance arrangements for beds maintenance, contribute to audits and quality improvement activity, and escalate risks or issues appropriately. Ongoing training and competency development will be supported to enable progression of technical skills and contribution to a resilient, well‑functioning Beds Team.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have an engineering background with experience in service engineering and maintenance. A minimum qualification of HNC level or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering subject is required.

Applicants must hold a valid full UK manual driving licence.

All employees make a valuable contribution regardless of role. UHNM provides a wide range of development packages to ensure everyone has the opportunity to achieve their potential.

The Trust fosters a culture of inclusion, providing equal opportunities for career development that are fair and transparent. It is committed to being a diverse and inclusive employer and encourages staff to feel valued and respected. All staff are asked to commit to the Trust values co‑created by staff, patients, and carers, uniting us as a single organisation.
