This is an exciting opportunity for a Physician Associate to join our Oncology Clinical Trials Team at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. The successful applicant will work between the Research and Development Department and Oncology to support delivery of a rapidly expanding research portfolio including a broad range of commercial and non-commercial studies across multiple solid cancer sites.
We are looking for a dynamic, engaging and committed individual who will be required to perform all clinical duties for research patients, within their scope of practice and experience, as well as contributing to the wider team. The post-holder will be expected to work to the medical model, with the attitudes, skills and knowledge base to deliver holistic care and treatment within the Oncology Department under defined levels of supervision. They will have a keen interest in clinical research and be supported with bespoke training and mentorship to develop a career pathway within Oncology Research.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will work under the clinical supervision of oncology consultants to deliver high quality care to cancer patients on clinical trials.
They will have active involvement in supporting all aspects of clinical trial activities including recruitment, treatment, procedures and follow-up.
Clinically assess patients receiving study treatment and formulate management plans in line with study protocols for discussion with supervising consultant.
Interpret blood test results and scan reports and act on results including timely escalation to senior clinicians.
Integrate within the wider multidisciplinary team.

Job description
Job responsibilities
1. Take part in all of the treatment and assessment services of the department as and when requested, and work within the policies and procedures of the organisation.
2. Take patient histories and perform physical examinations of a patient. Record the history and examination in the medical records.
3. Perform other tasks, not prohibited by law in which the physician associate has been trained and is proficient to perform.
4. Work collaboratively with the clinical team, i.e. consultants, junior doctors, nursing staff, therapy staff etc. to encourage and ensure good working relationships.
5. Support the assessment of patients who present acutely unwell to the admissions unit and also the assessment of patients who are in-patients on the wards.
6. Deliver supervised out-patients clinics
7. To communicate with GPs and other health professionals the outcome of clinical appointments in a timely fashion.
8. To contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practice and national guidelines.
9. To fully document all aspects of patient care, and complete all required paperwork.
10. Support and contribute to timely discharge planning including completing discharge summaries and support optimising bed capacity.
11. Be responsible for a recognised caseload of patients in the day-to-day management of care.
12. To report all actual and potential clinical incidents involved in, in accordance with the Trusts reporting procedures for untoward events using the electronic reporting system (DATIX)

13. oBA/BS Degree prior to undertaking PA program.
14. oPG Dip in Physician Associate Studies from a UK training programme.
