Salary Level: Teachers’ Pay Scale SEN Hours: Full time General: Mary Hare educates profoundly deaf children at its residential school in Berkshire, and we pride ourselves on our pupils’ achievements at GCSE, A Level as well as B Tech and Vocational Courses. We offer the opportunity to teach highly motivated children, in small classes, where you can make a real difference at this national centre of excellence for deaf education. No knowledge of sign language is required, as we follow an auditory/oral philosophy. The school is staffed by experienced subject teachers, who are also qualified (or trainee) Teachers of the Deaf. Teamwork is vital, as is the sharing of resources, responsibilities, knowledge, and ideas, if the learning needs of these children are to be met successfully. At Mary Hare we deliver a range of vocational qualifications to students of mixed ability. Animal Care resources include a garden area, mixed woodland and a variety of animals varying from small mammals, exotic species and livestock on site. The position requires a flexible person who can plan and deliver lessons to small groups of deaf sixth form students, with a future possibility of delivering to younger pupils. We currently offer and deliver levels 1-3 qualifications (City and Guilds) in Animal Care and Management. You will work with another teacher and a technician and will be expected to deliver engaging lessons and assess and verify assignments. An element of this role will be helping to develop and expand our animal collection in conjunction with animal welfare requirements. Main Duties & Responsibilities: Prepare and teach consistently engaging lessons in animal care and/or management, following the Teaching and Learning strategy. To ensure engaging Schemes of Work are in place, which are appropriately adapted to offer accessibility to all students. Regular liaison with the animal care manager regarding animal updates and support and co-ordinate the work of the other animal care teacher. Adhering to the designated qualification framework and assessment processes Prepare resources and the teaching environment, both theory and practical. To ensure that effective tracking of students’ progress is in place, identifying any underperformance, putting in place effective intervention programmes. To maintain up to date CPD as per the requirements of the awarding organisations and share knowledge and expertise with other members of staff. To keep up to date and advise Head of Faculty and SLT about curriculum development issues. To champion the work of the department, ensuring it has a good profile in school and beyond. To organise trips and visits and build relationships with external employers in liaison with our work placement team (GetSET). To develop and maintain good relationships with other providers for sharing good practice To develop and guide future development of provision The post may include some weekend and school holiday work to help to provide 365 -day care for the animals as part of a rota Be a presence around school, encouraging good behaviour and punctuality.
