Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the Lung Clinical Nurse Specialist Team. This newly created post will work alongside the current CNS team and will develop a post‑surgical Nurse‑Led Follow‑Up Programme, which involves accepting referrals, maintaining a database, contacting patients by telephone prior to surveillance CT scans, scrutinising reports, and, in collaboration with the consultant surgeon, determining further surveillance or escalation. Audit of the programme will be required, including patient satisfaction surveys. There is also an expectation to develop a patient group for lung cancer survivors for education and support.
Main Duties
* Work autonomously to manage own caseload of patients within the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Utilise advanced assessment skills, interpret complex needs and implement specialist nursing care for the cancer group and carers.
* Maintain and update patient records and ensure all relevant information is documented in medical and nursing notes.
Education & Leadership
* Develop specialist educational and training programmes on cancer and related issues.
* Provide clinical supervision and mentorship to junior NS and nurses as required.
* Maintain own professional development.
* Manage own caseload and coordinate patient journey across divisions.
Research and Audit
* Lead nursing research/clinical audit and contribute to development of knowledge within a specialist field of practice.
* Undertake evidence‑based practices and disseminate relevant research and best practice.
* Support and advise junior staff who wish to undertake audit and research in the specialist field.
Job Responsibilities
* Key worker for lung cancer patient caseload (approx. 100 new patients per annum) and provide advanced nursing assessment and support.
* Lead service development, audit and research projects and develop educational packages.
* Provide daily support to the MDT coordinator in tracking patients across the pathway in line with Cancer Waiting Time Targets.
* Deliver the post‑surgical Nurse‑Led Follow‑Up Programme: accepting referrals, maintaining database, contacting patients by telephone prior to surveillance CT scans, collecting and scrutinising reports, and, in collaboration with the consultant surgeon, determining subsequent surveillance or escalation and relaying results in a timely manner.
* Develop a patient group for lung cancer survivors for patient education and support.
Person Specification – Essential
* Registered General Nurse.
* Post‑basic qualification in cancer/palliative care or equivalent.
* Proven evidence of continuous personal and professional development.
* Demonstrable significant post‑registration experience in cancer, palliative care or relevant speciality.
* IT literate.
Person Specification – Desirable
* Demonstrable experience of audit and research leadership and management.
* Research qualification.
* Leadership and motivational skills.
