ESC runs events across the South Coast and needs an experienced H&S volunteer to lead on risk assessments, policy, insurance liaison, and volunteer safety briefings. A practical, high‑impact role for someone with real health and safety knowledge.
What difference will you make?
ESC's events bring together people who are often navigating chronic illness, difficult diagnoses, and stretched personal capacity. When they come to one of our events, they need to know they are safe, that the environment has been properly assessed, and that someone knowledgeable is looking out for them. That responsibility sits with this role.
The role overview
Beyond individual events, you will build ESC's H&S framework from the ground up, creating policies, templates, and processes that will protect our volunteers, our attendees, and our organisation for years to come. The infrastructure you put in place will allow ESC to grow its events programme with confidence, knowing that safety is embedded rather than bolted on.
This is also a role that directly supports ESC's ability to secure venues, maintain insurance cover, and demonstrate to funders and partners that we operate responsibly. Your expertise underpins the charity's credibility as much as it protects its people.
What are we looking for?
We need someone with demonstrable experience in health and safety, ideally including event H&S or public-facing activities. You should have a solid understanding of risk assessment methodology and H&S legislation as it applies to events and community settings, and be confident putting proportionate controls in place without over-engineering things.
Experience liaising with insurers, or working with charity or voluntary sector insurance arrangements, is highly desirable, as this forms a significant part of the role. A NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent qualification would be an advantage, though we are more interested in practical knowledge and sound judgement than in credentials alone.
You will need to be a clear communicator who can translate H&S requirements for non-specialists, including event volunteers who may have no prior H&S experience. Reliability and the ability to work to firm deadlines are essential; event dates do not move, and risk assessments need to be in place well before people arrive.
Experience delivering H&S for community events or public gatherings, and an understanding of accessibility and inclusive event design, would both be valuable additions. Above all, we are looking for someone who takes safety seriously, works in a practical and solutions-focused way, and is committed to ESC's values of inclusivity, trust, and community.
Hybrid
Some in-person attendance at ESC events on the South Coast will be required, particularly for larger events, planned well in advance. Otherwise the role is remote, requiring around 1 to 3 hours per week on average with more activity during event periods.
What will you be doing?
Endometriosis South Coast (ESC) is a registered charity supporting people affected by endometriosis and adenomyosis. We run events throughout the year, from community support sessions to our flagship Family Fun Day and Sunflower Ball, and the safety of everyone who attends is paramount.
As Risk Assessment & H&S Lead, you will be ESC's most senior voice on health and safety. You will develop and maintain our risk assessment framework and H&S policy, complete or oversee risk assessments for all events and activities, advise event leads on requirements specific to their activities, and act as our primary liaison with the charity's insurance provider.
On the people side, you will develop H&S guidance for volunteers covering lone working, event safety, and incident reporting, and ensure everyone is properly briefed before each event. You will also work closely with our Safeguarding Lead to make sure H&S and safeguarding considerations are joined up, and report monthly to our People & Volunteers Trustee on risk and H&S activity.
