This is a fixed term position, offering 25.5 hours per week.

We are delighted to offer an exceptional opportunity for an experienced and dedicated Registered Dental Nurse to join our team on a 12 month fixed contract, to cover maternity leave, within the Department of Special Care Dentistry and Paediatric Dentistry at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. This role presents a unique chance to contribute to the delivery of high-quality care, impacting the lives of patients across the North West region.

As an integral member of our team, you will collaborate with esteemed professionals, participating in the provision of exemplary care across various facilities, including Chorley Hospital, Royal Preston Hospital, and our outreach clinics at Skelmersdale and UCLAN.

We seek an individual with both passion and proficiency. Post Qualification in Sedation is essential. Desirable qualification in Radiography, or Special Care Nursing are prerequisites, ensuring your capability to excel within this dynamic and fulfilling role.

Main duties of the job

We are an expanding department with 3 Consultants in Special Care Dentistry, 1 consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, Senior Dental Officers and a Dental Therapist, accepting referrals from across Lancashire and South Cumbria, providing a range of oral care for patients with complex disabilities and impairments.

These include medically compromised patients, anxious paediatric and adult patients, patients with physical and learning disabilities and patients with mental ill health.

We work closely with other dental specialties at the Trust including Restorative Dentistry, Orthodontics and the Oral and Maxillo facial team.
A range of treatment modalities are available including sedation techniques and General Anaesthesia.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Assist chair side to support and chaperone Dental Surgeon in the provision of complex oral health care for patients within Special Care for example patients with medical problems, mental health problems, severe learning disabilities, acute anxiety who exhibit violent and aggressive behaviour
2. Perform nurse led pre-operative assessments for adult and paediatric patients.
3. Support and provide patient education oral health promotion.
4. Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff.
5. Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
6. Assist in setting, monitoring and maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.
7. Maintain accurate and complete records of all care activities, in a timely manner, adhering to local and professional standards for documentation.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

8. 3 years post qualification experience
9. Ability to work unsupervised
10. Experience of working in an OMFS / Or a dental specialty

Desirable criteria

11. Experience of Sedation & General Anaesthesia
12. Experience with patients with complex needs
13. Recent acute experience
14. Knowledge and ability to take dental impressions for study models/MADs
15. Able to perform venepuncture

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

16. GDC Registration
17. NEBDN/NVQ qualification
18. Hold a relevant post qualification in Sedation

Desirable criteria

19. A second post qualification in; Dental Radiography Oral Health Education Sedation Dental Nursing Special Care Dental Nursing Paediatric Dental Nursing Dental Implant Nursing Dental Impression certificate
