Job summary
The York-based Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer Clinical Nurse team has an exciting opportunity for a full-time, Band 6 CNS to join a dynamic and welcoming group of 16 staff. You will deliver high-quality, holistic care to patients and their families across the GI cancer pathway, using expert clinical knowledge to provide specialist advice, emotional support and care coordination. This is a split role, combining the full scope of specialist CNS practice with taking lead responsibility for coordinating, managing and developing the cancer follow-up programme and its associated systems.
Working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team, you will build strong relationships with surgical, oncology, pathology and radiology consultants, while being supported to develop your skills and knowledge in GI cancers.
The role also includes -
Contributing to service improvement
Supporting team learning and development
Building professional networks
Promoting the GI service through education and cancer awareness events.
Main duties of the job
Manage a large GI cancer cohort, including around 600 active patients requiring CNS intervention and holistic support, and more than 1,000 patients on a remote surveillance programme.
Act as a consistent point of contact across the cancer pathway, developing therapeutic relationships to ensure patients and families feel informed, supported, and involved in decisions. Advocate for patient preferences to maintain personalised, responsive care.
Deliver independent nurse-led clinics, providing cancer diagnoses, follow-up information, and support through complex and emotive discussions. Complete comprehensive assessments across treatment, follow-up, survivorship, and supportive care, identifying priorities and delivering specialist advice aligned with individual goals.
Use expert clinical judgement to triage needs, initiate timely interventions, and escalate to the MDT when required. Request and interpret investigations, making autonomous decisions regarding follow-up or referral.
Use digital systems for real-time management and oversee the GI surveillance platform, reviewing results, identifying patients needing escalation, and ensuring continuity and safety.
Maintain high-quality, evidence-based care and contribute to audit, service improvement, education, and mentorship to support consistent, high-standard practice.
